A team suisso-american has discovered an antibody “win” against the new coronavirus, a discovery the result of a research on the Sars epidemic of 2003, according to an article published Monday in the scientific journal Nature. This “human monoclonal antibody” has been selected from the blood of a patient with the Sars virus, which is a cousin of SARS-CoV-2 to be the origin of the current pandemic.
“The promise of an effective antidote”
This neutralizing antibody “contains the promise of an antidote effective to limit the spread of pandemic Covid-19”, according to this article. The team mainly composed of researchers of the biotech switzerland Humabs Biomed (a subsidiary of the american Vir Biotechnology) and the american university of Washington, Seattle (west), has managed to select a monoclonal antibody that shows “a neutralizing activity wide against multiple sarbecovirus including the SARS-CoV-2”.

The sarbecovirus constitute a class of coronaviruses, including the SARS-CoV-2 of the current pandemic, and the virus responsible for the Sars outbreak between 2002 and 2004. The human monoclonal antibody called “S309” has been selected among 25 other antibodies that were collected in 2004 and then in 2013 in the blood of the same patient who suffered from Sars.
S309 is in recognizing one “epitope” (a molecule remarkable) to the surface of the virus SARS-CoV-2, which is “separate” from the structure by which it is docked to the receptor ACE2 in human cells. This epitope is relatively well conserved between different viruses in this category, especially in Sars, which would explain the character field of the antibodies against different sarbecovirus.

The team assisted to a part of the work by the Virology Unit Structurale (Institut Pasteur/CNRS), has also found that a cocktail combining S309 with two other antibodies had a neutralizing power improved” compared to a use of the single S309.
