Tom Horn Film

Steve McQueen portrays the illustrious lawman, outlaw, and gunfighter Tom Horn in William Wiard’s 1980 American Western film Tom Horn. Based on Horn’s personal writings

Tom Horn, a renowned tracker and scout who assisted in the capture of Geronimo, wanders about the rapidly vanishing western frontier. He provokes prizefighter Jim Corbett as he rides into a tiny town at the start of the tale, and Corbett ends up unconscious and severely injured in a livery stable.

Horn confronts cowboys at an auction whose cattle have Coble’s brand, referring to himself as a “stock detective” and asking them why their cattle have Coble’s brand. He gives them fair warning and then launches a one-man crusade to murder or expel anyone who disturbs the livestock of his sponsors.

Horn uses harsh but successful tactics. Following a public gunfight, the local populace is concerned by his aggressive tendencies, and sentiment turns against him. The owners of the huge cattle firms start making plans to kill him because they understand that while he is accomplishing exactly what they paid him to do, his methods would eventually damage their reputation. For the same reasons, Joe Belle, who is interested in politics, wants Horn out of the way. When a young lad tending sheep is shot by a.45-60, the same calibre rifle Tom Horn is known to wield, their plot is launched.

Horn takes some time to realise he’s being played. He won’t leave the county or stay away from the town because he is self-assured and proud of his innocence. Coble and Glendolene make an effort to caution him, but Horn ignores them. Joe Belle coaxes Horn out of a pub and into his office, where a man is secretly recording their chat in the adjacent space. While denying responsibility for the killings, Horn claims that “if I did shoot that boy, it was the best shot I ever made.” Horn is taken prisoner after this chat.

Horn appears bewildered, unaccustomed to not being able to enter and exit his favourite hills as he pleases. He seeks to escape from jail by breaking out. Based on the newspaperman’s testimony, who distorted the discussion between Belle and Horn, he is recaptured and found guilty.
