In the US Senate, Bowers and Barbier have two weeks to mount a defense for Trump against accusations that he helped spark the Jan. 6 riots that left four people and a Capitol police officer dead. On Monday evening, the House of Representatives forwarded the impeachment article to the Senate. Trump’s second impeachment trial begins on February 9. If found guilty, he could lose the right to hold public office.
Barbier defended Dylan Roof’s companion, Joey Meek, who pleaded guilty to telling others not to tell police that Roof was responsible for the murder. In 2017, he was sentenced to 27 months in prison.
