Apple founder Steve Jobs’ handwritten advertisement for the Apple-1 computer fetched an impressive $175,759 (approximately Rs. 1.4 crore), according to RR Auction in Boston. The auction house also posted a blog discussing this particular ad, which was compiled in 1976 for an Apple-1 computer on an 8.5 x 11 binder in black ink. The document was obtained by the sender during a visit to the garage of Steve Jobs in the same year, it presented the technical details of the Apple-1 – a computer ahead of its time.

Jobs’ handwritten note describes the computer’s features, including a power supply, 8K bytes of RAM, a full CRT terminal with keyboard input, composite video output, and expandability to 65K via a peripheral connector. Interestingly, Jobs preferred the 6501 or 6502 microprocessor due to the presence of BASIC programming. It even listed the exact number of integrated circuits (ICs) used, highlighting its potential for growth and expandability.

The ad also features two Polaroid photos taken at The Byte Shop in Mountain View, California. One of the images shows a fully assembled Apple-1 board, complete with keyboard and monitor. The second image shows an Apple-1 computer screen displaying the Apple Basic program. Jobs’ note reads: “Unclear because the camera was moving.”

The historical significance of the document is further confirmed by its alignment with the original Apple-1 advertisement, which was published in the July 1976 issue of Interface Magazine. Apple historian Corey Cohen confirmed the document’s authenticity, noting that the technical specifications listed in the handwritten draft perfectly match those of the original ad.

In the same issue, RS Jones wrote a product review entitled “Comparing Apples and Oranges”. The article included quotes from Jobs and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak.

Steve Jobs’ signature, contact information and address of his parents’ home, which served as the first headquarters of Apple Computer Company, “11161 Crist Dr. Los Altos, CA 940,” adds a personal touch to this ad and reveals the company’s humble beginnings.

Steve Jobs concluded the ad by saying that the Apple-1 was a “rare deal,” as the board and manual were listed for $75.
