Whether it’s a constant stream of spam or a persistent ex who won’t take no for an answer, blocking messages is something you need to learn. Whether you’re using an iPhone or an Android smartphone, the process is probably faster and more painless than you think.
No matter what phone you have, if you’re wondering how to block text messages — and even unwanted phone calls — it’s easy, and we’ll show you how.
How to block text messages on your iPhone
Blocking messages in iOS is easy. On your iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, or older iPhone, the easiest way to block a message is from the Messages app.
Step 1: Select a message from the contact you want to block.
Step 2: Choose theirs Name or Profile photo at the top of the message.
Step 3: Choose Info.
Step 4: Choose Block this caller.
How to block iPhone messages from contacts
Another way to block messages from known contacts is to add them to yours List of blocked. It doesn’t matter if you use this method or the one above, because in any case you will block not only messages but also phone calls and FaceTime calls. It saves you from going to Phone and FaceTime applications to block the same person.
Step 1: Open settings application, scroll down and select it Messages.
Step 2: Scroll down and select Blocked contacts.
Step 3: Choose Add new…. Select the contact you want to block. Contacts can only be added one at a time. To remove a contact, select Edit in the upper right corner and select Minus sign next to the name of the person you want to remove.
How to block iPhone messages from unknown numbers
Unfortunately, you can’t directly block unknown and private numbers the same way you can block known contacts. However, you can filter them and separate them from people you know. This will create a new “Unknown Senders” tab in your Messages app and you won’t receive notifications for them. It may not be ideal, but it’s a decent compromise.

How to report iPhone text messages as spam
Another thing you can do is report spam and unwanted iMessages. When you get an iMessage from someone you don’t know, it will be Report the trash connection. Select the link to forward the sender information and message to Apple. The company should address the contact and possibly prevent the person or bot from messaging you.
You can also email Apple at [email protected]. Note that you’ll need a screenshot of the message, as well as the email address or phone number the iMessage was sent from and the date and time you received it.
Apple does not deal with SMS and MMS messages, but you can always report them to your carrier. AT&T, for example, suggests sending an unsolicited message to 7726 (“SPAM” in phone parlance). When received, the operator will look at the message.
How to Block Text Messages on Android
The easiest way to block text messages on Android is through Google’s Messages app. All Android phones can download and use the Messages app via the Google Play Store, and many come with it by default, so this is the method we highlight here as the easiest.
Step 1: Open Messages.
Step 2: Select and hold a Message from someone you want to block.
Step 3: In the context menu that appears, select Three dots to the right.
Step 4: Tap Block.
Step 5: Alternatively, if you select a message to open, you can select Three dots in the upper right corner.

If you use another messaging app, there will probably be a special way to block contacts. However, they tend to follow a similar pattern. Most of the time, you’ll want to enter your own Messages application From there you will generally find a three point menuand there you will find settings. You can also select a message and look for the blocking option there. As with all things Android, your results may vary, but it’s a good idea where to look.
How to block text messages through a mobile operator
Many mobile operators provide services and additional settings to help their users block messages from certain numbers, such as those from telemarketers. T-Mobile has Message Blocking, Verizon has Block Calls & Messages, and AT&T has Secure Family.
