Mason Greenwood offered lifeline by European giants after being axed by Man Utd

MASON Greenwood has been handed a lifeline by Europe’s top club after being sacked by Manchester United, reports claim.

The Red Devils are in a race against time to offload the 21-year-old before the transfer window closes at 11pm on Friday.

Mason Greenwood was reportedly offered a bailout by Besiktas

And Turkish giants Besiktas are now reportedly considering a loan move for the young striker, according to i.

The Süper Liga side have emerged as potential suitors for the striker and are reportedly considering entering into talks to restart Greenwood’s career.

Greenwood “mutually agreed” to leave United on August 21 following his arrest for attempted rape and sexual assault.

He was charged in October last year, but all charges were dropped in February by the Crown Prosecution Service.

Greenwood has not kicked a ball for Utd since January 2022 when he was suspended and this month it was decided it would be best for everyone if his future was outside of Old Trafford.

And Besiktas reportedly believes that the initial loan, of around six months, could be used to gauge public sentiment around the forward.

If the move proves successful and Greenwood is welcomed by the fans, Besiktas are thought to be open to discussing a long-term move.

“Of course they saw what was said in the UK and beyond,” a source told i.

“People think that Turkey is an easy way out for Greenwood, because he will simply be able to continue his career away from the public eye.

“But the clubs know it doesn’t work that way. Journalists will come from England to follow his progress wherever he goes, we’re sure of that.

“A short loan is still attractive. If things go wrong, he’ll be back in Manchester in no time. If he comes to Istanbul and immediately scores goals, the whistle will disappear quickly.

“It’s just the way football works, no matter how bad the taste remains. I think the Turkish fans will accept it.”

It is also believed that sanctioning any move by Greenwood would require the consent of the Besiktas women’s team.

If the move is not finalized before the transfer window closes, United may have to wait until the January transfer window opens.

Or they could face paying the £75,000-a-week striker around £8m to end his contract.

If Utd agree to cancel Greenwood’s contract before the transfer window closes, he will be free to move to any club in any league.

However, unless the Red Devils can mutually agree to cancel Greenwood’s contract, his options are slim.

That’s because most of Europe’s top leagues also close their transfer windows on Friday.

In this scenario, Greenwood would be left with a ranching selection of minor leaguers whose windows remain open.

Among them are: Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Greece, Israel, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Switzerland and Turkey.

The forward played his last game on January 22, 2022 in a Premier League clash against West Ham, which United won 1-0.

Reports of interest from Italy have also not arrived, with any Serie A side yet to join United.

It was previously reported in June that AC Milan had inquired about the forward.
