News about Lecresia Campbell

I’m working on finishing a piece about an artist who is, in my opinion, “overall” and featured singer as Gospel Music Heritage Month draws to a close. Lecresia Campbell is my choice for the latter. I am very sad to hear of Mrs. Campbell’s passing today.

She is a gift to the Body of Christ whose name is perhaps known only to fans of gospel music. Though well received, she received little attention as gospel music became more popular. The last post of this GMH month will be dedicated to her in her honor and with deep sadness.

It is a personal loss. The thought of Campbell popped into my head a week before the news of her illness. Her vocals especially impressed me as a classical singer. To learn some tricks and just listen to her beautiful voice again, I went to YouTube and played a few of her songs one by one.

Aside from singing Black Spiritual Songs, I never really knew what to do with my voice in the gospel industry. For black performers with active tunes, spiritual repertoire performed on special occasions or in theatrical productions provides a safe environment.

That is, of course, unless your first name is “Lecresia” and your last name is “Campbell.” Her fashion was well received. By putting honest allusions to the phrases, Campbell accomplished what I could only hope for: crafting a very formal presentation that would be accepted by the religious masses.

Another aspect of her music that excites me the day I listen to all her songs again is her ability to “serve” a song. I come to listen to music. I stay to do my job. When I listen to Mme’s “I’m In His Safety”. Campbell, the gentleness of her voice calmed me down.

That week I found out that Campbell had had a stroke from a Facebook post. She is said to have had a follow-up surgery that went well and will be discharged tomorrow, September 30. While Campbell posted a statement on Facebook on September 7 announcing that she was will reply to messages, fans have been hoping for a full recovery.
