Switching to a new phone from your trusty Galaxy s5? Whether you’re selling your old device, giving it to a friend, or planning to throw it in the trash, you’ll want to wipe your phone first. Doing a factory reset is easy, but there are some key things you need to know before you get started.
In this article, we’ll cover everything you’ll need to do to factory reset your device.
Backing up your device
Before you start erasing your Galaxy S5, make sure you have backed up all your precious files. You can backup basic data to Settings > Backup & reset. For other files, you can use a backup application or service. For example, you get 15GB of free storage with Google Drive, and there are a number of other alternatives to choose from, such as My Backup Pro and SMS Backup & Restore.
Encrypting your data
A security company recently revealed that it is possible to recover some data after a factory reset, but you can take a precautionary step to prevent this from happening before resetting your phone. If you’re selling your S5 or just passing it on to someone else, we recommend encrypting it first.
To do this, go to settings and choose Safety from u System section. choose Encrypt the device, follow the on-screen instructions, select a password, and plug in the charger if prompted. This process may take an hour or more, but once you’re done, you can follow the instructions below.
Factory reset
Pull down the notification screen and tap the gear icon to display settings. Choose Backup and reset and then Restoring factory settings.
Double check that everything is backed up and then tap Reset the device at the bottom of the screen. Touch Delete all on the next screen and wait for the process to complete and the phone to reboot. You are done.
NOTE: If you’re erasing your S5 to sell or give away, we recommend removing your accounts before doing a factory reset. You can do this by going to Settings > Accountsby tapping each account and then tapping More top right and Remove account.
How to factory reset Galaxy S5 using hardware keys
If you find that the touchscreen is unresponsive, there’s a problem accessing the menu, or you’ve forgotten your pattern lock, you can still factory reset your S5 using the hardware keys.
Step 1: Turn off your Galaxy S5.
Step 2: Press and hold at the same time Boost button, Home and button Power until the Android icon appears on the screen.
Step 3: Use Turn down the sound highlight wipe data/restore to factory settings option and press Power selection button.
Step 4: Use Turn down the sound highlight again Yes, delete all user data, and press Power to select it.
Step 5: Wait until you see reboot now option and use it Power selection button.
Step 6: When your S5 reboots, it should be wiped and ready to be reset.
