ChatGPT was down for most of the day, creating an unsettling moment for a large number of people who have come to rely on the advanced AI for help with writing and coding, as well as help with various topics.
The outage was included for paid subscribers of ChatGPT Plus, which was meant to ensure priority status during peak times.
According to the popular website monitoring service Downdetector, the problems started around 1 a.m. PT on Monday but subsided within a few hours. The much larger outage began at 8 a.m. and was not fully restored until 7:54 p.m., nearly 12 hours later.
Despite the service being back online, there are still some issues. The latest update on OpenAI’s status page for chat.openai.com says: “We have fully restored ChatGPT service for all users. We continue to work on restoring the history of previous conversations to users.”
The company that opened the world’s eyes to the potential of artificial intelligence seems to be handling the huge increase in traffic very well. The backend resides on Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing service.
While the service was not working, Sahil Lavingia summed up the overall sentiment created by the outage in this tweet.

Meanwhile, Bing Chat has been providing quick responses to the growing number of people with access. Interest in other alternatives, such as Google Bard, has also been on the rise.
This isn’t the first time ChatGPT has had problems, but it could be the most significant outage it has experienced to date.
