Kayla DiCello, a freshman at Florida State, announced via Twitter that she will be taking a year off to work toward her goal of the 2024 Olympics. Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year honors went to DiCello. The honor came less than a week after the team won the SEC Championship.

She earned Week 2 Specialist of the Week to go along with six consecutive SEC Freshman of the Week awards, giving her a total of eight awards for the season. In 2019, DiCello became the first gymnast to receive nine SEC weekly honors since graduate student Trinity Thomas.

Along with all those honors, DiCello had a strong, high-scoring season. Of the three freshmen who won 10 in the 2023 season, she was the first. Her top all-around score of 39.75 placed her second among all freshmen in the country. DiCello finished sixth overall and had the highest all-around score by a freshman at the SEC Championships.

DiCello won the NCAA Pittsburgh Regional all-around competition. With a score of 39.80, she won the regional competition with the highest total in the country.

DiCello intends to return to Maryland to continue training there with former US Olympic team head coach Kelli Hill.
