Ron Cephas Jones, a veteran actor who received two Emmy nominations for his portrayal of a long-lost father on the NBC drama series “This Is Us,” died Saturday at age 66, according to a spokesman. Jones’ manager, Dan Spilo, said in an emailed statement that the actor died “due to a long-standing lung problem.”
Anyone who had the pleasure of knowing him could feel his warmth, beauty, generosity, kindness and heart throughout his career, according to Spilo. Due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Jones underwent a double lung transplant in 2020 and spent about two months in a Los Angeles hospital.
Jones portrayed William “Shakespeare” Hill on “This Is Us,” a biological father whose life is improved by befriending the people raising his son Randall Pearson, played by Sterling K. Brown.
After Jones passed away, Brown wrote on Instagram: “One of the most wonderful people the world has ever seen is no longer with us.” “The world has lost some of its brightness. You are appreciated, brother. And we will miss you.
Jones played a more prominent role in the show’s early seasons, but appeared in some capacity in each of the show’s six seasons, which featured time travel storylines that gave actors recurring opportunities even after their characters died.
Jones was nominated for two more Emmys and won two for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series in 2018 and 2020. “Ron was the best of the best – on screen, on stage and in real life,” said ‘This Is Us’ creator Dan Fogelman on X, the social networking platform that replaced Twitter. What an actor, my God. Because everything he did was flawless, I don’t believe I ever changed a single shot of him in the cut.
Before and after “This Is Us,” Jones devoted most of his career to the theater, returning to Broadway even after a transplant required him to learn to breathe and walk again.
In an interview with The New York Times in late 2021, Jones admitted that since he started working on “This Is Us,” he had been secretly dealing with respiratory problems. He stated, “My whole life has been the stage. Jones stated, “The thought of not performing any more seemed worse than death.”
He was nominated for a Tony Award and received a 2022 Drama Desk Award for his performance as a truck stop chef in Lynn Nottage’s Broadway production of “Clyde’s.”
Jones, a resident of Paterson, New Jersey, majored in drama at nearby Ramapo College, where he originally planned to study jazz, but changed his mind during his sophomore year. He traveled the country in the late 1970s and early 1980s while working as a bus driver in Southern California for several years.
He moved to New York in the mid-1980s, where he began collaborating and hanging out at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, a key hub for poetry, hip-hop and the performing arts. This gave a boost to his career.
