A Georgia couple had “salt poured into their unfathomable emotional wounds” after they discovered a video of their baby’s autopsy was posted on social media by the pathologist they hired to perform the examination, according to a lawsuit they won Newsweek.
The couple hired a doctor to conduct an independent autopsy on their newborn, who was allegedly decapitated by their obstetrician during delivery, as they accuse the pathologist of betraying their trust in what the couple’s lawyers are calling “one of the most egregious and outrageous” influence-peddling cases we’ve seen. ever met.”
The newborn’s parents, Jessica Ross and Treveon Isaiah Taylor Sr., filed a lawsuit Sept. 1 against independent pathologist Dr. Jackson Gates and Gates Rapid Diagnostic Laboratory of Atlanta, alleging invasion of privacy, intentional infliction of emotional distress and fraud, according to a statement sent to Newsweek by the couple’s lawyer.
This is the second lawsuit filed by Ross and Taylor related to the death of their baby.

The Riverdale, Georgia couple is represented by Atlanta attorneys Roderick Edmond and Keith Lindsay of Edmond & Lindsay along with attorney Cory Lynch of the Law Office of Cory J. Lynch.
“Dr. Jackson Gates attempted to use the terrible loss of our clients to raise his profile on social media, without the family’s permission,” the company said in a statement.
Gates declined to comment or be interviewed in an email Newsweek on Tuesday night.
The couple’s “horrific” ordeal began on July 10, when they were notified that their newborn son, baby Isaiah, had died during childbirth, said Ryan Julison, a spokesman for Edmond & Lindsay, LLP, and the Law Office of Cory Lynch, LLC. Newsweek in an email on Tuesday.
In August, Ross and Taylor filed a lawsuit against their obstetrician, Dr. Tracey St. Julian and Southern Regional Medical Center, where the baby was born, accusing St. Juliana and the medical staff lied to the couple about the decapitation, refusing to let them hold the baby and not informing them of what had happened.
According to that lawsuit, the child’s shoulders became stuck about 10 hours after Ross gave birth and his head was then severed when St. Julian spent hours trying to get out.
During the delivery, the medical staff “pulled and manipulated the baby’s head and neck so forcefully that the bones in the baby’s skull, head and neck were broken,” according to the lawsuit, which also alleges that Ross’s repeated requests for a C-section they refused the cut for hours.
Clayton County Police are investigating the case.
A law firm representing the couple said the family then hired Gates for answers after the funeral home discovered their newborn’s head had been severed.
Ross paid Gates $2,500 to perform the autopsy, according to the complaint he received Newsweek. The contract did not give Gates permission to record the review or disseminate video of that review, Julison said in a statement.
Days after hiring Gates, the couple was notified by a family member that the doctor had posted a picture of the newborn’s severed head on his Instagram page, which has more than 11,000 followers, according to the lawsuit. He was asked to remove the photo, which he did. However, Gates then released two clips of “gruesome and graphic” autopsy footage a few days later, according to the lawsuit.
“After suffering one of the most devastating losses any family could ever endure, Jessica Ross and Treveon Isaiah Taylor, Jr. poured salt into their unfathomable emotional wounds when they discovered that a video of their baby’s highly graphic medical exam had been publicly released to a doctor who entrusted him to perform the autopsy,” the family’s lawyers said in a statement to Newsweek.
Gates previously defended sharing graphic content on his account, saying his “purpose of being on social media is to provide educational resources to all patients.”
His public Instagram account, which has more than 6,000 posts, contains photos and videos from other autopsies he has conducted. Gates does not reveal the identity of individuals in its posts. As of Tuesday night, the photos and videos of baby Isaiah appear to have been removed.
