Career of Neal Katyal
President Bill Clinton invited him to produce a report on the need for more pro bono legal work. In 1999, he created special prosecutor legislation, which had an impact on Mueller’s investigation into the Russian government’s attempts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election.
Additionally, he co-represented the deans of the vast majority of prestigious private law schools in Grutter v. Bollinger and co-counseled Vice President Al Gore in Bush v. Gore. In 2017, American Lawyer magazine named Katyal its 2016 and 2017 Grand Litigator of the Year Award for drafting anti-union briefs in the Supreme Court cases Janus v. AFSCME and Epic Systems Corp. against Lewis, Katyal drew criticism. Katyal’s firm, Hogan Lovells, described her success in these cases as a “big win”.
In Nestlé USA, Inc. v. Doe, a joint action brought by former enslaved children abducted and forced to work in the cocoa fields of Ivory Coast, Katyal represented Nestle and Cargill before the Supreme Court in 2020. In 2021, Katyal assisted banking powerhouse Citigroup in its effort to recoup $900 million in wrongful transfers to creditors of Revlon Inc. In State v. Chauvin, Katyal also supported the lawsuit. In Moore v. Harper, a case involving election law, redistricting and the independent state legal theory before the Supreme Court in 2022, Katyal argued on behalf of the defendants.
The court upheld Katyal’s position by a 6-3 vote, rejecting the theory of autonomous legislation. In a 2022 lawsuit, Johnson & Johnson was accused of spreading cancer-causing baby talcum powder. Katyal defended the company. His hourly rate for this job was $2,465.
