2018 Honda Grom ABS adds increased safety to your ‘Gromance’

When Honda announced the MSX125 a few years ago, our first thought was grim: “Here’s another little bike that won’t be coming to the US.” Our sighs were premature, as it was revealed that we would be getting the same motorcycle in the US, where it was given a new name: the Thunder.

The smallest Honda streetbike was a real hit, with dealers’ stock being back-ordered for months. The bikes barely had time to reach the showroom before they were looted. At around $3,000 and with an MPG rating of 134, the Grom has found fans in everyone from beginners to seasoned riders who wanted a second (or third) bike to buzz around town.

Not to be outdone, Kawasaki saw room in the market and brought their 125cc motorcycle to our shores. The 2017 Z125 Pro has similar specs to the Grom, and we thoroughly enjoyed riding one last year. You can see our full review of the Z125 here.

2018 Thunder ABSMotorcycles don’t usually get updates as often as cars, but it’s likely that Kawasaki’s entry into the segment prompted Honda to extensively update the Grom for the 2017 model year (European and Asian territories saw updates earlier). The new lower exhaust lowers the center of gravity. The redesigned fuel tank and body panels give the bike a street fighter look. Complex LED headlights and a new raised rear section and LED taillights further set the new Grom apart.

The steering wheel has been moved forward, which has contributed to a more aggressive driving position. The passenger seat is also raised. Even the key has been updated to a toggle key style. The brake shoes were painted red, and it is in this area that the upcoming 2018 Grom has the biggest change.

Starting in 2016, the EU made anti-lock brakes mandatory on motorcycles over 125cc. While we don’t currently have such laws in the state, you’ll be able to opt for ABS on the 2018 Grom. While pricing hasn’t been released for either the standard or ABS models, we can look at the previous year to get an idea. The 2017 Thunder retails for $3,299. ABS should add $300-$500 to the price, as it costs that much to upgrade to ABS on Honda’s 300cc models. It might be less for the Grom, though with a possible increase in base price, you can expect the 2018 Honda Grom ABS to cost at least $3,500.

Aside from the available ABS (which adds 5 lbs to the Grom’s 229 lb. curb weight), the 2018 Grom will be a carryover from the previous year. It appears that the ABS model can only be had in two of the four colors offered for the standard Grom: Matte Gray Metallic or Pearl Red.

There hasn’t been much news on the 2018 Kawasaki Z125 Pro, but the 2017 model we tested had a starting price of $2,999. Given the competition from Honda, it is certain that Kawasaki will offer ABS on future Z125 models of the year.
