Honkai: Star Railway it starts the player with enough characters to cover almost every element and path in its complex combat system.
Elements, like Pokémon, have type weaknesses that players should take advantage of to reduce health and break armor. Paths are more like specific roles that characters play, such as damage dealer, shield, and healer. Honkai: Star Railway it further challenges players to experiment with specific abilities and Cones of Light for each character once they get used to combat multipliers enough, but that’s for later. It gives the player almost everything they need for free before deciding to look for more powerful characters later in the game.
HoYoverse eventually added Collei to the list of free characters it offered Gensha’s influenceso it is possible that Honkai: Star Railway will add more later. However, there’s more than enough on offer at launch — here’s everything you need to know about the eight free characters available so far.

- Element: Physical, Fire
- Path: Destruction
Trailblazer is your character. Unlike the others, they learn to control multiple elements during the story and can switch between them whenever you want. They can deal a lot of early game damage as physical DPS, and their power only grows from there.
March 7

- Element: Ice
- Path: Conservation
March 7th is the first to join your party at the start of the game. Her defensive skill helps you survive early game encounters until you get a reliable healer, and her ability to freeze opponents comes in handy. Never mind that her energetic personality adds to the overall charm of the game!
Dan Heng

- Element: Wind
- Path: Hunting
Dan Heng joins shortly after March 7th as you progress through the prologue. He excels at single target attacks and recharging, especially with his fast charging ultimate.
What

- Element: Fire
- Path: Harmony
Asta isn’t technically “free” since you have to use the Star Rail Pass to get it, but it’s a mandatory part of the game’s gacha-pulling guide. It is a guaranteed first pull from the banner for beginners. Her attachments and firepower are a useful early game support.
Hertha
- Element: Ice
- Path: Erudition
Herta, the intelligent but quirky owner of the space station, joins your party after your first run through simulated space. Like March 7, she specializes in Ice, but her gear varies greatly due to her focus on multi-target attacks instead of defenses.
Natasha

- Element: Physical
- Path: Abundance
Natasha is another character you can get as you progress through the story, but only after you reach the Underworld in Jaril VI. She is one of the few healers in the game. Fortunately, she fits into many teams as a flexible unit.
Many teams benefit from healers unless they focus on defensive characters like March 7th. Even then, there is no harm in additional treatment.
Qingque

- Element: quantum
- Path: Erudition
Qingque is the last free character you can get in the game so far. Once you reach Trailblazer level 21, you can complete Forgotten Hall – Memory Stage 3 to claim it.
She is one of the few characters with a quantum element, which makes her a valuable opponent for some enemies that have it as a weakness. There’s no point investing in her if you have Seele, but she guarantees you’ll have a Quantum character no matter what.
Serval

- Element: electric
- Path: Erudition
Serval is a thank you gift from HoYoverse for achieving a large enough number of pre-registrations for Honkai: Star Railway. You can request it from your in-game mail. She’s the only Electric party member you get for free, which will be especially useful for Jaril VI’s robotic enemies.
Honkai: Star Railway is available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, iOS and Android.
