The couple initially called it quits in January 2020 before moving to California with their son Archie, 21 months. Just over a year later, Buckingham Palace confirmed on February 19 that the duo “will not be returning as working members of their royal family” and must give up their patronage and other honors.
During a candid interview on The Late Late Show With James Corden, Harry, 36, opened up about the reasons for his shock departure.
“It was not moving away, it was retreating rather than retreating,” explained the former military pilot on Thursday, February 25. “It was a really difficult environment that I think a lot of people have seen. We all understand what the British media can be like. It was destroying my mental health.”
Harry saw how “poisonous” the treatment of his wife (39) and household had become and decided to protect them at all costs. “I did exactly what any husband and father would do, which is [say]”‘I want to get my family out of this,’ but we’ve never drifted apart,” he added. “As far as I’m concerned, whatever decisions are made on that side, I’m never going to walk away.”
In her official announcement of the couple’s separation, Queen Elizabeth II noted: “While we are saddened by their decision, the Duke and Duchess remain beloved members of their household.” Harry and Meghan, for their part, insisted they would “remain committed to their service and duty to the UK and the world” and that “support is worldwide”.
While on vacation in Los Angeles with James Corden, Harry reiterated his intention to be a beacon of positive change, regardless of his status in the royal family.
“I have no idea [what life looks like today ]”, he explained. “It’s a slightly different version, but a continuation of what we’ve been doing in the UK. … My life will always be more about public service and Meghan signed off on that.”
Five times before news of the permanent split hit headlines, the group announced they were expecting baby No. 2 following the Suits alum’s miscarriage in July 2020. As they look ahead to the future, a source exclusively told Us Weekly that Harry and Meghan are “finally they feel free”. However, the queen wished they had reached a compromise.
“The Queen hoped to return, but there was not much she could do about accepting their decision,” another writer told us. “After lengthy discussions with the entire palace, Harry and Meghan have stopped being royal once and for all. It was their decision to leave.”
