“The relationship between me and my daughter has always been strained,” Jamie testified during a court hearing in June 2019.
Growing up, Britney and her mom, Lynne Spears, were thieves, along with the matriarch who took her oldest girl to out-of-state auditions and gigs in their native Louisiana, while Jamie bounced from job to job and struggled with alcoholism. Lynne thought about leaving her husband several times after their July 1975 wedding (and even filed for divorce in December 1979 before withdrawing her request), but breaking up their family was the last thing she wanted to do.
“Looking back, I guess I could have ended it a lot sooner and maybe saved my son [Bryan] some heartache. But I wouldn’t have my wives, Britney and Jamie Lynn,” wrote the former teacher in her 2008 memoir, “Through the Storm.” Besides, it’s almost impossible to say that I should have done this or that. At this point, the divorce from Jamie it didn’t look like the real thing.”
However, after Britney’s career took off in 1998, her parents’ marriage took a turn for the worse. They divorced in May 2002, with the Grammy winner calling it “the best thing that ever happened to my loved ones.”
Jamie remained in Britney’s life after her split from Lynne and was tasked with playing a key role starting in February 2008, when a Los Angeles court gave him command of his famous daughter’s personal affairs and estate amid her much-publicized meltdown. Although he originally asked for his conservatorship to be temporary, it became permanent in October. The legal settlement was put in place because, despite Britney eventually returning as a professional, she released new albums, toured the world, scored a year on X Factor and earned nearly $140 million during her four-year stint in Vegas.
As Britney’s longest-serving conservator—many others, like attorney Andrew Wallet and authorized fiduciary Jodi Montgomery, have come and gone over time—Jamie has been credited with effectively saving Britney’s life when she was at her lowest point.
“This is a story about a close family, but it’s not ideal,” Jamie’s lawyer Leon Gladstone told the court in October 2012. It’s a story about a father who had to step up and do something he didn’t think he would have to do.
And yet the Crossroads celebrity and many people in her inner circle feel that ending the conservatorship is long overdue.
“Britney’s family is at war with each other and it’s all about custody,” a source exclusively told Us Weekly in September 2020, noting that Lynne, who briefly reconciled with Jamie in late 2010 but never remarried him, wants a care plan put in place that would move Britney’s personal life out of conservatorship.”

Jamie’s alcoholism
Lynne composed in Through the Storm that Jamie “always liked to have a beer here and there, but didn’t start drinking much until Bryan was born” in April 1977. “With each alcohol-soaked episode, our perfect little life began to fall apart, along with the knot we tied with our vows and our love began to work loose, thread by thread,” she continued. Jamie eventually checked into rehab in 2004 after Britney urged him to seek help.
Jamie’s absence
Britney’s representative at the time, Nancy Carson, recalled that Jamie visited much less frequently, stating in the February 2021 issue of “Framing Britney Spears” in The New York Times Gifts, “Jamie visited from time to time and was looking forward to this the trip would be worth it to be able to justify the money that was hard for this” Former Jive CEO Kim Kaiman meanwhile stated in a documentary, “Her mom would have done whatever it took, personally and for the sake of the family, for Britney to become famous person. I never spoke to her dad. The only thing Jamie ever said to me was, ‘My daughter is going to be so rich she’s going to buy me a boat.”’
Jamie was Britney’s side through her 2008 MTV documentary, Britney: For the Record, as she prepared for her comeback after months of private setbacks. In a particularly memorable scene, the patriarch whips up his daughter’s favorite comfort food, telling the camera, “Grit is a classic Southern tradition. She’s been eating it since she was born. … However, everyone else has Wheaties, Southern girls’ breakfast of champions is grits of cheese.”
Jamie’s protection
In the summer of 2014, a former gym owner bought a video of Britney’s then-boyfriend David Lucado kissing and dancing with another woman so it wouldn’t go viral and embarrass his daughter. Britney woke up with Lucado shortly after.
Jamie’s service
Jamie attended several of the pop star’s concerts during her Las Vegas residency, Britney: part of Me, which ran from December 2013 to December 2017.
Support for Britney
The former Mouseketeer canceled her planned Vegas residency, Britney: Domination, in January 2019 after her dad was hospitalized with a ruptured colon. “We are all very grateful that he came out of it alive, but he has a long road ahead of him. I had to make a difficult decision to devote my full focus and energy to my family at this time. I hope you can all understand,” she currently wrote via Instagram .
Multiple sources exclusively told Us in September 2019 that police responded to Jamie’s California apartment a month in advance after he got into an argument with his grandson Sean Preston and “shaken up” the then-13-year-old. Britney’s ex-husband Kevin Federline subsequently obtained a restraining order from Jamie, barring his ex-father-in-law from coming near Preston or the former couple’s eldest son, Jayden. Although the Ventura County District Attorney’s office declined to file child abuse charges against Jamie, the episode sparked a conflict between Britney and her father and prompted Federline to change custody of his ex-wife. “The episode with Jamie and Preston changed everything,” a source exclusively told Us in December 2020.
Britney and Jamie’s court battle
During her time out of the spotlight, Britney got involved in her conservation work. Back in August 2020, she filed court documents saying she “strongly objects” to Jamie’s role as guardian of her person and her property. She asked that Montgomery, who temporarily replaced Jamie after his health scare in November 2019, permanently oversee Britney’s personal belongings. She also requested that a “qualified corporate assistant” take charge of her money. Regardless of his daughter’s pleas, Jamie continued to fight to stay on the case.
