Consoles are notoriously harder to make and implement mods. However, with a game as massively popular as it is Animal Crossing: New Horizons, there was no doubt that people would find a way to make this already open experience even more customizable. There will be endless debates about which villagers are the best not only in New horizons but the Animal Crossing franchise as a whole. Everyone has their favorites that they just don’t want to give up. Thanks to some modders, there are a few characters from older titles that you can bring back to join you on your island. Most importantly, you can add Tarou, Pierre, and Nindori from Animal Forest e+ on the Gamecube. Tarou, who will take the place of Fang on your island, has been completely redesigned. He has his own image, icon, poster, catchphrase and personality. The same goes for Pierre, who took the place of Stinky, but Nindori is extra special because he was never available outside of Japan. Even then, you could only get it with an e-reader add-on. Thanks to this mod and many others, you can completely change the population of your island however you want. Play as Isabell

Isabell is a strong contender for the most popular character in the Animal Crossing franchise, so who wouldn’t want to play as her instead of just with her? With this mod you can do just that. Sure, there are plenty of ways to customize your character in a normal game, but you’re always stuck as a boring old man while your neighbors become fun animals. This mod isn’t just a simple head swap either — it’s compatible with most of the clothing options your average villager has, plus it can do all the expressions you’d expect. Some downsides are that you can’t change any facial features, which would defeat the point of the mod anyway. Also, the texture quality is a bit low, her hair doesn’t animate, and they haven’t implemented socks or tights yet.
More color options

Speaking of customization, if you don’t want to completely switch for another character but feel limited by the available hair and eye colors, this mod adds a bunch of new colors to make your character look exactly how you want it. Nintendo has added some new options in updates, but not nearly enough for most people. What might be even better is that the latest update has added a beta version of the skin color editor to further customize your villager. While still a work in progress, like most of the mods on this list, this mod allows more people to create a character that accurately represents them, which can only be a positive thing in a game like this.
More inventory and tradable items

There are several parts New horizons which almost everyone finds frustrating. Inventory management is sometimes just unnecessarily boring. You can increase the size of your pocket over time, but items within your inventory can only stack in increments of 10, 30, or 50. This can be very limiting if you plan to be out all day collecting materials and don’t want to keep running back to town to threw inventory and made room. This mod is all about practicality. The biggest improvement is increasing the stack size of all your items to 99. However, it doesn’t allow items that can’t be stacked to suddenly be able to. Another nice addition included in this mod is the ability to eat and trade insects, fish and seafood. It’s a small but welcome way to make inventory management even easier.
More tours of the Mysterious Island

Mystery Tours were a brand new addition Animal Crossing: New Horizons. This feature allows you to travel to a random, uninhabited island to pick up materials that you may not have or have run out of on your own island, such as iron nuggets, rare fish, and exotic fruits and flowers. This mod is more of an upgrade to this feature than a complete overhaul. You are still taken to a random island, but with some changes. First, the “randomness” has been changed, but it also reintroduces some islands into possible options that were dropped, such as Rare Flower, Big Fish, and May Day Tour Islands. As mentioned, everything is still random, but now with more possible options and reasons to keep rolling the dice to see what you uncover.
Unbreakable tools

Continuing with the quality of life mods, we have one that allows you to make any tool in the game unbreakable. We’ve all had that moment when we’re out fishing, digging, chopping, or whatever and are forced to stop because the tool falls apart in our hands. The game is kind of designed around that because there are better, more durable tools you can work with, but even the best tools in the game can break, making everything seem worthless. This mod comes in three varieties, so you can even customize how much or how little you want to interact with the stamina system. You can make only gold tools unbreakable as a nice final reward for getting them, make any tool higher quality than flimsy unbreakable, or just get rid of durability all together and make no tools break.
No more bass

Even the biggest fan of puns got sick of the old “I caught a sea bass!” No, wait — that’s at least a C+!” a joke that occurs every time you catch this fish. What’s worse is how often it comes up, making the joke feel more like an insult over time. Fortunately, you can get rid of this “joke” forever, along with all those useless bass. This mod does exactly what the name says: It sets the bass spawn rate to zero. It’s such a simple mod, but this and other fish mods are some of the most popular out there.
Build more bridges and slopes

We’ve already touched on character customization mods, but what about your island? For many people, this is even more important than how your character looks. However, once you manage to fully transform and modify your island to your liking, you will realize that you are actually quite limited. Bridges and slopes are limited to a measly eight, forcing you to make design decisions you shouldn’t. Well, thanks to the practical mode, that number can go up to 32 bridges and slopes. Just be aware of known issues with this mod, such as only the first eight bridges and slopes appearing on your map, and some bugs that will cause additional ones to become invisible. Hopefully, the creator has fixed the bugs, but you should be aware of them appearing.

Animal Crossing is the perfect way to relax and unwind. This is the kind of game that can take you back to a simpler time in your life, especially if you’ve played older games. What better way to mix your childhood nostalgia with the latest game than to bring in the original soundtrack from the GameCube original? This mod brings the title screen and music from the original every hour to give you all the good feelings you remember.

Last but by no means least is another basic mod that, frankly, should be in every game. It’s such a simple thing to skip the title screen and load straight to your island, but when you think how much time it will save you, especially if you play a lot, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it. There really isn’t much to say. Stop wasting time on loading screens and rummaging through menus and get right back in the game.
