Although Amazon and Apple are competitors in the field of television streaming services, they are working together to let you listen to music across brand lines. If you want to play music from the Apple Music subscription app or songs stored on your Apple device, there are ways to do both. We’ll show you the steps you need to take to do this.

Play Apple Music on Echo using Bluetooth
Even if you don’t have a paid subscription to Apple Music, you may still have a music library of downloaded or uploaded files that you’ve saved to a music app like iTunes or Apple Music. In this case, Alexa is the perfect app to help you access and listen to music. Amazon Echo and Echo Dot designed their smart speakers to pair with smartphones via Bluetooth, which Alexa has no problem processing.
Step 1: Bring your Apple device closer to your Echo. When it’s nearby, give the command “Alexa, connect to my iPhone” or “Alexa, connect to my iPad.”
If you have a lot of mobile devices, you can use the specific name of your Apple device instead, but Alexa is generally smart enough to connect to the right device as long as it’s nearby.
Step 2: Alexa will ring and usually say something like “iPhone connected to Echo”, although it will give the specific device names you provided so you know it’s working.
If Alexa says it can’t find your iPhone or other devices, make sure your Bluetooth is turned on and can connect. You may need to disconnect accessories such as AirPods for the connection to work properly.
Step 3: Go to your iTunes or Apple Music app and launch your desired playlist. Your songs should automatically start playing on your Echo device. Alexa will usually turn up the volume a bit before playing, but you can adjust this yourself.
Changing the volume of the Echo and the volume of your Apple device can work, but it’s usually easier to control the volume at the source.
Step 4: When you’re done playing music, say, “Alexa, disconnect from iPhone” or whatever Apple device you might be using. Your Echo will ring again to let you know the process is complete.

Play Apple Music on Echo with skill
This is a great option if you’re an Apple Music subscriber and listen to music a lot, or if the constant connection and disconnection of Bluetooth isn’t a good option for you. Alexa has a skill just for these occasions, but you have to set it up.
Step 1: Enable the Apple Music skill for Alexa. You can find it by going to the Amazon skill page. Or, alternatively, you can go to the Skills section of your Alexa app and search for it specifically. Do so by going to Alexa settings (lines in the upper left corner), selection settingsand selection Music and podcasts. Here you will see an option that says Connect new services. Select it and then select Apple Music icon. Now choose Enable useand sign in to your Apple account if necessary (Apple’s own instructions aren’t quite up to date, so be sure to follow ours here).

Step 2: Make sure everything is up to date. You may notice that the Apple Music skill is not highly rated. This is partly because many people don’t know the difference between Apple Music and iTunes, but problems also occur because people don’t know that the Alexa app may need a manual update.
Once you download the app, you’ll need to sign in to your Amazon account to access the Alexa options. You’ll usually receive a notification if a new version of the app is available, so be sure to keep an eye out for it. When you see an Alexa update, be sure to run it to get the most out of your device. Devices like the Echo will generally update automatically as long as they’re connected to the internet, so turn on your Echo and make sure it’s connected. Finally, make sure your Apple Music account is up to date and working properly.
Step 3: Now you can give Alexa specific music commands, like, “Alexa, play today’s hits on Apple Music,” or you can ask Alexa to play specific artists and albums. Alternatively, you can expand your list of commands to suit your mood, with options such as “Sad Music” or “Happy Music”. No matter what command you say, always add “on Apple Music” at the end, so Alexa knows which platform to use when playing music.
Step 4: If you want to eliminate the need to say “on Apple Music” for every playlist command, you can set Apple Music as the default player. This way, Alexa knows how to play any music file you request. Go back to settings in the Alexa app, go to Music and podcaststhen select Default services on top. It’s probably set to Amazon Music by default, so take your pick To change and select Apple Music as its new default value. Apple Music will remain connected to Alexa until you manually disable the skill.
