How to make potions in Minecraft

If you play Minecraft in survival mode potions can come in handy. You can drink a potion that improves your melee attacks, your speed, or allows you to breathe underwater. This guide shows you how to make potions Minecraft — even ones you can throw at enemies.

Players playing in creative mode don’t really need potions. Still, they’re fun to create, even though the path to manually obtaining each ingredient can be quite long. Your trip includes a trip to the Nether, fishing, rabbit hunting and more.

Gather your materials

The list of materials you need is quite long, and five of them are found in the Nether. This means you need to build a portal, enter the underworld, defeat monsters and find the Nether Fortress without getting lost.

Remember, each block traversed in the Nether is equal to eight blocks traversed in the Overworld. You might want to consider leaving markers, like torches, to guide you back to the portal. Switching to “Quiet” mode probably wouldn’t be a bad idea either – at least until you get home.

Step 1: Build a portal to the Underworld.

Step 2: Enter the Netherworld and find the Nether Fortress.

Step 3: Gather the Nether Ingredients:

  • Blaze Rods — Drop Blazes into Nether Fortresses that are used to make Blaze Powder.
  • Ghast Tear — Dropped by Ghasts hovering above the lava.
  • Magma Cream — Dropped with Magma Cubes or crafted from one (1) Flame Powder and one (1) Slime Ball.
  • Nether Wart — Found in the Nether Fortresses that grow in Soul Sand.
  • Soul Sand — Used to breed more Nether Wart in the Overworld (optional).

Step 4: Return to the Overworld to continue collecting ingredients:

  • Dragon’s Breath — Dropped by a dragon from Ender.
  • Sparkling Melon — Crafted from one (1) melon and eight (8) gold nuggets.
  • Golden Carrot — Crafted from one (1) carrot and eight (8) gold nuggets.
  • Phantom Membranes — emitted by phantoms.
  • Blowfish — use a bucket of water or a fishing rod to catch.
  • Rabbit’s Paw — Dropped by killed rabbits.
  • Spider’s Eye — Killed spiders and witches drop out.
  • Sugar — made from one (1) sugar cane.
  • Turtle Shell — Made of five (5) shields dropped by baby turtles.

Step 5: Collect Overworld Potion Modifiers:

  • Fermented Spider’s Eye — Made from one (1) spider’s eye, one (1) brown mushroom, and one (1) sugar.
  • Red-hot stone dust — mined from red-hot rocks.
  • Gunpowder — dropped by Creepers, Ghasts, and Witches; it is also found in chests.
  • Redstone — mined from Redstone ore.

You cannot make a potion without this necessary device.

Step 1: Open the crafting table.

Step 1: Open the crafting table.

Step 2: Add seven (7) iron bars to the grid to create a “U” formation: three in the left column, one in the bottom square of the middle column, and three in the right column.

Brew a nasty potion

First you have to brew a “foundation” called Awkward Potion. It’s like the soda in your favorite cola: without it, you’re just a glass of syrup.

Step 1: Open the cooking rack.

Step 2: Place one (1) filled glass bottle each in the bottom three squares marked with the “bottle” icon.

Step 3: Place one (1) Nether Wart in the top square.

Step 4: Place one (1) Flaming Powder in the square in the upper left corner marked with the “fire” icon.

This process turns all three bottles of water into strange potions. Now you need to add other ingredients to make these Tricky Potions usable. After that, you can add modifiers to make the effects last longer and more powerful.

Types of drinks

With nasty potions in hand, now comes the tricky puzzle of crafting useful potions.

However, the list is long, so we divided them into three categories: positive, negative and mixed. Remember, all potions start with the nasty potion you just created. With each type of drink, we list its main ingredients and overall effects. We also list the modifiers you need to enhance or extend its power.

For example, you can make a potion of fire resistance by combining a nasty potion with magma cream in a brew stand. Afterwards, you can return the fire resistance potion to the brewing rack and add redstone dust, extending its duration from three minutes to eight minutes.

Later we provide instructions on how to make a throw.

Brew a splash potion

You obviously want to hurt your enemies, so any type of combat requires a damaging concoction ready to pounce on attacking attackers. We like to use slow or poison. Not all potions are bad, of course, and many of them have healing and invigorating powers. But you should keep those potions for yourself, not for your enemies.

Step 1: Open the cooking rack.

Step 2: Place one (1) common potion each in the bottom three squares. In this example we are using poison potions.

Step 3: Place one (1) gunpowder in the top square.

Step 4: Place one (1) Flaming Powder in the square in the upper left corner marked with the “fire” icon.

Step 5: Pull the new spray potions into your inventory.

Brew a long-lasting spray potion

The effects of this recipe will haunt their victims long after you empty them, making this potion optimal for defeating the constant stream of enemies bombarding your space.

Step 1: Open the cooking rack.

Step 2: Place one (1) spray potion in one of the three bottom squares. In this example, we’re using Poison Spray Potion.
