What is BeReal?

BeReal has recently become quite a popular social media app, and if you’re wondering what all the fuss is about, you’ve come to the right place.

In the following sections, we’ll go through everything you need to know about the new photo sharing app where everyone chats and shares their photos with their friends at random times of the day.

BeReal is a social media and photo sharing app that’s less about curating your own image (like you might find on Instagram or Facebook) and more about capturing more authentic photos of your life as it happens in the moment and then sharing those photos with friends. If Instagram is all about attracting followers and likes by creating and curating a polished collection of influencer-like photos and videos, BeReal tries to be the opposite: an app whose purpose is to nurture and maintain connections with friends through less polished, more spontaneous posts that allow friends to share more ” real” moments.

BeReal is designed to enable and encourage more authentic posts. Instead of simply sharing photos, BeReal has an interesting time format of quick photos. Let’s take a closer look at how BeReal works.

How does it work

BeReal has a unique format because it’s not about its users creating a constant stream of content for others to scroll through. It might help to think of it less as a platform for creators and brands and more as a social networking space for friends to share a unique photo post with each other once a day. It’s like a daily visual check with friends.

Here’s how BeReal works: All users are sent a daily push notification inviting them to take a photo (usually what they’re currently doing). BeReal users initially have a maximum of two minutes to take a photo and post it. However, you can still post the photo after the timer expires; it will just be marked as “late” and your friends will be notified that you posted late. It’s also worth noting that in order to see your friends’ posts (or other users’ public posts), you must first post your daily photo.

A BeReal post is pretty simple compared to most social media posts on other platforms. It’s simply an image post that contains two photos taken at the same time: a photo of what you’re doing and an automatic selfie of yourself taking the previous photo. The result is a vertically oriented, large photo of what you were doing, with a smaller rectangular selfie sitting on top of the large photo in the upper left corner. (If you’ve used TikTok Now, you’re probably already familiar with this dual-camera photo-taking feature.)

You can add a title to the post after the post, but that’s about it. No other bells and whistles. You can’t add filters, stickers or anything else. You can’t edit these photos either. And that’s the point. You and your photos should “be real”.

Once your BeReal post is published, your friends can comment or react to it using the RealMojis app feature. The RealMojis feature allows you to add your own photo where you recreate the emoji you want to use to react to the photo. So if you choose the thumbs up emoji, you’ll be prompted to take a selfie of yourself giving the thumbs up sign. That selfie will be attached to your photo reaction. You won’t have to take a selfie every time you want to react to something, because BeReal only has five emoji reactions to choose from. You’ll just have to take a selfie for each of these reactions, and BeReal will save them for future reactions. There’s also a lightning bolt option that lets you create a custom emoji (with another selfie) if you don’t like the other preset options.

BeReal allows you to retake photos, but your friends will be able to see how many retakes you’ve made before they finally publish their post. You will also be able to see your previous BeReal posts on your profile. They will be displayed like a calendar and you just select the day you want to view to see the post. BeReal also allows you to share your posts on other platforms like Instagram.

And finally, BeReal offers a limited Discovery tab, which contains public BeReal posts from people who are not your friends. You cannot comment on these posts, but you can react to them. You can also set your own posts to be public.
