NOAA, which already warned in May that the Atlantic would likely experience an “above normal” season in 2020, has therefore revised its forecasts upwards.
The agency, which included between 13 and 19 storms, now expects between 19 and 25 tropical depressions to form, of which 7 to 11 could become hurricanes. Between three and six could reach Category 3 or higher, carrying winds of at least 178 km/h.
Nine named storms already
“This is one of the seasonal forecasts and the most active NOAA has released in its 22 years of existence,” said US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross.
The season officially runs from June 1 to November 30, with peaks in August and September. The annual average is six hurricanes, including three major ones.
It has already begun, with nine named storms, including two hurricanes, hitting the southern United States and the Caribbean.
