A 16-year-old minor has been charged “for the crime of intentional destruction by fire” of the Chibert forest in Anglet (Pyrenees-Atlantiques), where a fire devastated 167 hectares on July 30, the Bayonne prosecutor announced this Friday.
The teenager, who lived in the house and had a “proven propensity for arsonism, boasted among his friends that he was the author,” Bayonne State Prosecutor Jerome Bourrier said at a news conference. The minor, who now calls it “bragging”, then denied the facts, the prosecutor said.

An investigation led by Bayonne’s judicial police led to the establishment of “serious and similar evidence” against the young man, who faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. Last weekend, a local woman reported to the investigators after talking to two young people who praised the young man.

The young man was already known to the police because of his “propensity for pyromania”, after a fire was reported in the bedroom of his house at the end of June, and the lawyer had not yet met him.
