Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0’s overpowered new DMZ bundle ignites pay-to-win fears

Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 struggled to retain players due to strange gameplay decisions and controversial mechanics that divided the community. However, the new feature is especially cheering for gamers.

Recently, publisher Activision released an in-game trading package that some players consider a “pay-to-win” option, drawing criticism once again. The paid pack, “Roze and Thorn,” gives DMZ players a free unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that temporarily detects the locations of enemy players at the start of a match, offering an immediate advantage.

It’s easy to see what pissed off fans. An overpowered pack gives players an advantage right at the start of a DMZ match. If all teams of DMZ players have this Operator equipped, they can coordinate to have three drones side by side at the start of the match, which can be devastating.

It’s the DMZ Call of dutyextraction mode, which requires players to earn loot and escape the map before the timer runs out. The map is filled with both real players and AI bots, so there are plenty of ways to eliminate yourself early. Dying causes you to lose any items you’ve earned, so an early UAV appearance can make or break a match for certain players.

Activision has done a decent job of addressing much of the community’s criticism (although it sometimes takes a long time to issue fixes). However, since the pay-to-win shop pack is something that players have spent money on, it’s unlikely that we’ll see changes to it, so as not to upset players who bought the pack.

As part of Season 3, drones in the DMZ were slightly nerfed, requiring players to wait a minute before using drones. While this is a step in the right direction, it still doesn’t do much overall, as players will still be able to spam their UAVs right after the one-minute countdown is up.
