The problem was that you actually had to to pay to get Safety Mode — $5 per month for most plans.

But don’t worry, it’s free now. Because you really shouldn’t be paying for 128kbps in the 21st century.

This is something that both T-Mobile and Sprint have been doing for a while, and even smaller carriers like Cricket Wireless offer a reduced speed option to save you paying extra. So it’s about time Verizon got on board.

Of course, Safety Mode won’t actually let you do much with your smartphone if you’re not connected to Wi-Fi. After all, browsing the internet will become a painful experience and even using apps could become frustrating. But at least you won’t have to worry about being charged for using more data than you’re allotted, and you’ll be able to access the web if you really need to (though you’ll have to be extremely patient).

Of course, if you don’t like the idea of ​​using particularly slow internet at the end of the month when you run out of data, Verizon still gives you the option of paying overage fees for normal LTE coverage. But be warned, you’re better off really you want to be online, or you just have a lot of money to spend, because you’ll be charged $15 for every extra gigabyte you use.
