Meet the Laphonza Butler family
Laphonza Butler was born to working-class parents in Magnolia, Mississippi, the youngest of three children (she has two brothers). In an interview for Elle magazine in 2021
Laphonza’s career began in 2009, working as a long-term care organizer at SEIU. She quickly rose through the ranks of the caregivers’ union to become its leader, and in 2013 he was tapped to lead SEIU California, the state’s largest labor organization, representing more than 700,000 workers. While in that position, she oversaw SEIU’s campaign to raise California’s minimum wage to $15 an hour. The effort was the product of contentious conversations between Butler and Gov. Jerry Brown’s chief of staff, Nancy McFadden.
“We both worked for the people of California,” Laphonza said in an interview with Political Breakdown. “She represented much more than me. But we all came to the rooms of tension and disagreement and negotiation with Californians in mind and the best for Californians.”
When Laphonza became president of EMILY’s List in 2021, her family moved from Los Angeles to work in Washington, DC Butler is currently registered in Maryland. Before he is sworn in, he will re-register in California, where he still has a home, according to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office.
Governor Newsom’s office announced late Sunday that Laphonza, a longtime Democratic consultant and labor leader, will be California’s next state senator. She will be only the third black woman and the second openly lesbian senator in history. Senator Dianne Feinstein died Thursday at the age of 90, leaving a vacancy in her position.
Laphonza, the current head of women’s fundraising organization EMILY’S List, will take her place. She advised former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Vice President Kamala Harris, and is well connected to Newsom’s inner circle.
“An advocate for women and girls, a second-generation champion for working people and a trusted advisor to Vice President Harris, Laphonza Butler represents the best of California and will proudly represent us in the United States Senate,” Gavin said in a written statement. “While we mourn the tremendous loss of Senator Feinstein, the very freedoms she fought for – reproductive freedom, equal protection and safety from gun violence – have never been under greater attack. Laphonza will carry the baton left by Senator Feinstein, continue to shatter glass ceilings and fight for all Californians in Washington DC.”
One of her brothers is probably named Olan Butler and Gideon Butler.
Laphonza Butler Father
Laphonza Butler said during her interviews that her late father was a small business owner. He was diagnosed with a terminal illness.
Laphonza’s father unfortunately passed away when she was 16 years old.
Laphonza Butler Mother
After the death of Laphonza Butler’s father, her mother allegedly became the breadwinner of the family. When her husband fell ill, her life was not very easy.
“My life was really lived through the eyes of a caregiver,” Laphonza told KQED about her upbringing. “My mother was a caregiver for my father in his final years, and the need to understand what families go through every day when it comes to issues like health care… was really a precursor to my professional career.”
In order to raise her three children, Laphonza’s mother worked as a classroom assistant, caregiver, security guard and bookkeeper.
In September 2021, Laphonza tweeted: “I am guided by the example of my mother and the future of my daughter. My mother worked several jobs, raising me and my brothers and taking care of my father through serious illnesses. During the 18 years of working with and leading the union, I have often thought about my mother’s efforts and her sacrifice.”
In another tweet from November 2021, she wrote: “From a young age I saw the sacrifice of women like my mother who provided this invaluable care to my father when he was ill. Carers across the country do a job that is significantly undervalued.”
Who is Laphonza Butler’s partner?
Neneki Lee is the partner of Laphonz Butler. The married couple has been together since at least 2009, but they intend to keep the details of their private life away from the public eye.
Neneki Lee, who was born in April 1974, is 49 years old. According to her LinkedIn, she works as the National Division Director – Public Service at SEIU. It started working in November 1997.
According to the website, Neneki is the director of SEIU’s Public Service Division. In fact, Lee and Laphonza Butler first met in Washington, DC, at SEIU headquarters. The Service Employees International Union, sometimes known as SEIU, is a labor union representing approximately two million members across the United States and Canada in more than 100 different occupations. Prior to that, she was employed by the Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions as a national coordinator. From 1991 to 1994, Neneki attended Spelman College. She attended Scripps College to study government and political science.
