ENG vs NZ World Cup Match: Netizens react to half-empty Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad

ICC World Cup 2023: One of the world’s biggest sporting events began just a few hours ago with the opening match between England and New Zealand. The inaugural match is being played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the world’s largest cricket stadium. Although there was a lot of excitement around the game, surprisingly, the traffic in the stadium was incredibly low. Social networks, especially X, were flooded with images of an almost empty stadium. Many also expressed displeasure stating that despite the stadium being half-empty, online ticket booking platforms were showing ticket inquiries as “sold out”.

Here’s how X users reacted to the Narendra Modi Stadium situation:

User X Rajiv wrote, “Hi Bookmyshow and BCCI, who did you sell tickets to if the whole stadium is empty! According to your website, tickets were sold out, but then how come the whole stadium is empty?” In a follow-up tweet, the user added: “According to Bookmyshow, tickets for the England v New Zealand match sold out within minutes! People were so crazy to watch this match that more than 1,00,000 tickets were sold out within minutes! But then who did they sell the tickets to? Are ghosts watching the match?” User X also shared a picture of an almost empty stadium.

“Disappointing to see the World Cup opening in front of just a few hundred spectators at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. An empty stadium,” added another. A third said: “Completely empty stadium in Ahmedabad.”

A few, however, argued that given the vast size of the stadium, even a good turnout would make it look empty. Some said that the crowd is less because this is not a match played by Team India.

Here’s how X users reacted:

“It is a stadium with a capacity of 130,000. It will look empty even with an audience of 40k,” user X wrote. “Keep in mind that the stadium has a whopping 132,000 seats. Even if it’s only 10% full, that’s still about 13,200 people, which is a normal crowd for these teams, with a stadium that big, it might still look empty,” another joined. “Brother, the main reason is that the Narendra Modi stadium is too big and the second reason is that of course the Indian match is not being played. Hotels in Ahmedabad are already pre-booked,” said a third.
