iMessage was down today, but it’s now back to normal

Apple Messages is open on iPhone 13 Pro MaxDigital trends / Digital trends

Apple’s iMessage — one of the biggest reasons to use the iPhone — had problems today.

Apple’s official system status website confirmed that the iMessage problem started at 11:50 a.m. ET. The problem was listed as “ongoing” for several hours, with Apple noting that “users may not be able to send or download attachments in iMessage.”

A quick look at Down Detector further confirmed the problem, with people saying they were having trouble sending messages, using attachments, and receiving messages. I haven’t been able to recreate the issues on my iPhone 14 Pro, but it’s clear something it was wrong.

Fortunately, everything seems to be back to normal now! As of 2:20 PM ET, the status page for Apple indicates that the issue is now resolved.

Other Apple apps also didn’t work

In addition to iMessage, Apple’s System Status page also lists ongoing issues for Apple Photos and iWork for iCloud. The Photos outage states that it “may be slow or unavailable,” which is the same report for iWork.

These two outages were resolved at 2:05 PM ET and both should be back to normal for everyone.

Service outages like this are never fun, but it looks like the issues (with this outage) are behind us.
