Norwegian family finds artefacts from Viking-era while looking for lost earring

A family’s quest to find a lost earring in Norway led to a startling discovery – a relic from the Viking Age. According to reports, the artifacts found by the family date back more than 1,000 years. Vestfold Cultural Heritage and Telemark County Council also shared about this find on Facebook.

The council originally published the title in Norwegian. When translated into English, it reads: “Jomfruland has been inhabited for many years, but evidence for this only goes back to the early Middle Ages, although it is believed to have been inhabited in the Viking Age as well.”

The family used a metal detector to search for a lost gold earring. However, when they turned on the device, they stumbled upon relics from the Viking Age.

What did the family find?

“A very well preserved bowl clasp and another item that matches both dating and style. We think this is a woman’s grave preserved in the family garden and we think she was laid there deep in the 8th century,” the council added.

The council also congratulated the family for contacting the authorities and informing them of this rare find. The section is completed with a series of pictures showing the relics and the family that found them.

The post was shared last month. Since then, a lot of people’s comments have been collected.

Here’s how Facebook users reacted to the rare discovery:

“Did they find the missing earring?” asked a Facebook user. To which the council replied: “Actually, we don’t know. It’s on the other side of the house. There must have been a bit too much fuss the day they found the artefacts.” Another commented: “It’s nice to see a child having fun. It must be like those Enid Blyton adventure novels of yesteryear for him.”

A third added: “Can someone translate what was found, thanks.” The council responded to the comment and added: “One is an oval-shaped brooch, commonly used on women’s halters from the Viking Age, to attach straps to the front of a dress. For the second artifact, we needed another day to interpret properly. We are now quite certain that it is a circular brooch that we know was made in Ribe, Denmark.” A fifth wrote: “Wow, totally cool.”
