Does the Google Pixel Watch have fall detection? Not yet, but it’s coming soon

Looking for a great Android smartwatch? The Google Pixel Watch is Google’s answer to the Apple Watch and the Samsung Galaxy Watch. With this new kid on the block, Google has inaugurated its own hardware-software ecosystem for multiple devices with many of the same critical health and security features.

The Pixel Watch offers Google’s software suite, which users can access via LTE or a smartphone connection, and includes health resources from Fitbit’s fitness line. The new watch, which runs Wear OS 3.5, is designed for optimal integration with the Google Pixel 7 and Google Pixel 7 Pro smartphones, which debuted alongside it.

Fall detection, a major safety feature, is often considered for those over 60, who are more prone to accidents and balance problems in the home. According to the CDC, about 800,000 older people are hospitalized due to fall-related accidents, and it is the leading cause of injury-related death in adults 65 and older. However, fall detection is also useful for younger people involved in sports, cycling or other activities where hard and potentially dangerous falls can occur.

How does fall detection work?

Apple and Samsung currently provide fall detection as part of a smartwatch’s feature set via a built-in accelerometer and gyroscope. These sensors monitor the user’s normal activity all the time so that the device can sense unusual fall movement. Accelerometers measure changes in velocity divided by time, while gyroscopes use gravity to determine orientation.

Both of these technologies working in tandem can detect if someone has fallen. Fall detection in both of these smartwatches is available through additional settings that must be enabled for it to work. Fall detection isn’t perfect and this feature may not detect every fall, but technology has advanced in recent years to detect falls during exercise, hiking, biking, or Zumba classes.

When will the Pixel Watch get fall detection?

Fall detection will arrive on the Pixel Watch this winter, although an exact date has not yet been announced. Like its competing smartwatches, the Pixel Watch’s fall detection will automatically help you connect with local emergency services or an emergency contact if you suffer a hard fall. It will automatically dial those services for help if you don’t respond.

Emergency SOS is now on

Emergency SOS, which works with fall detection, requires location services to be enabled, as well as an internet connection on the watch or via a Bluetooth connection to your Pixel smartphone. Once you enable Emergency SOS on the Pixel Watch, it allows you to quickly get help by pressing the crown of the watch five times in succession, which initiates a call directly to emergency services. When you set up emergency contacts, you can designate another person in addition to local emergency services to receive that call.

Setting up this feature on your Pixel Watch does not automatically sync the feature to your Google Pixel phone. Automatic emergency dialing is not universally available worldwide, and Australia and Germany do not support automatic emergency dialing.

There’s no indication that the Pixel Watch plans to adopt Apple’s new crash detection feature, introduced in the Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch Ultra and Apple Watch SE 2. In the event of a serious car accident, the latest Apple Watch checks to see if you’re OK and follows up with a call to 911 if not answer within 10 seconds.

You can now pre-order the Google Pixel Watch from the Google Store. The watch costs $350 for the Bluetooth/Wi-Fi model and $400 for the 4G LTE model, and regular sales begin on October 13. Google sells its smart watch in the USA, Great Britain, Canada, Australia, Japan, Taiwan and other EU countries.
