Rape charge in Switzerland : Tariq Ramadan heard in Paris by the public prosecutor of Geneva

The Islamologist who was subject to a judicial review preventing him from leaving French territory was questioned for just over three hours by prosecutors in Geneva.

Islamologist Tariq Ramadan, accused in France of four rapes he disputes, was heard in a Paris court on Thursday by a public prosecutor in Geneva, and another charge of rape with violence was brought by a woman in Switzerland.

The Swiss scientist, who is subject to judicial control that prevents him from leaving French territory, was questioned for a little more than three hours by prosecutors in Geneva, in the presence of the French investigative judge in charge of investigations into the French case. In 2018, a Swiss woman accused him of rape and kidnapping in Geneva in 2008.

“The hearing of Tarik Ramadan went very well, there is no indictment, obviously the investigation continues,” said one of his lawyers, Pascal Garbarini, at the end of the hearing. “Tariq Ramadan was very precise and gave a very detailed statement, which I think had a very positive effect,” he added.

“Deliver his version”

“It was simply the way Tariq Ramadan answered the questions and presented his version,” abounded Philippe Ohayon and Me Nabila Asmane, who are also defending. “This did not result in the filing of an indictment and we fully believe in the favorable outcome of this procedure,” they continued.

“Now there will be the next step which will probably be to confront the complainant,” Me Garbarini said. This should happen at the beginning of the year.

As of February 2018, the Muslim intellectual has been accused in France of “rape” and “rape of a vulnerable person”, due to facts alleged by two prosecutors, Henda Ayari and “Christelle”, respectively, in 2012 in Paris and in 2009 Lyon.
