Behind Bars: Rookie Year is a series about newcomers to the New Mexico Correctional Academy. These recruits joined the New Mexico Penitentiary (PNM). Recruits must face murderers, rapists and gang members who enjoy preying on the weak and helpless. Recruits who join must all undergo rigorous training. In the end, all recruiters have to ask themselves: is it worth it?

Behind Bars Rookie Year Where Are They Now?
Gregg Marcantel
Gregg Marcantel is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He has over 30 years of experience in the police, and then he took over a correctional home. He also spent many years as a homicide detective and as an undercover narcotics officer. He received a number of awards for his service.
Aaron Bell
Aaron Bill is the senior drill sergeant at the correctional facility. He spent many years as a corrections officer in New Mexico. He retired and then became the senior training officer at the nation’s first fully accredited criminal academy.
Fabian Abeyta
Fabian is 18 years old and is the youngest recruit. He spent all his years with his big brother. He said he was just a kid and didn’t know how anyone could take him seriously. He still lives with his parents and steps out of his comfort zone by working in an institution.
Javier Cazares
Javier Cazares is one of the smallest candidates in his class. All his life he was told that he would not achieve anything. He always wanted to be part of the police force and joined the military after high school. He is very protective of his mother and two sisters.
D’angelo Chaparro
D’angelo wanted to join the Marines, but was rejected because he had tattoos that looked like gang symbols. He then chose correction because he wanted to be part of a brotherhood. He is a former wrestler and is now working to join one of the elite special forces.
Zach Chavez
Zach is 21 years old and came to work in a correctional facility. He has some experience from his time working at the Sandoval County Detention Center. He then joined the academy.
Andrew Cordova
Andrew Cordova joined the institution after a variety of experiences. He grew up on the streets of crime in Albuquerque. He was with the wrong crowd when he was younger. Then he pulled himself together and started working in the county jail.
Cohen Mangin
Cohen Mangin came under great pressure from his family. He had three generations before him in correctional services. He came with all the knowledge given to him by previous generations. While at the institution, he discovered how much he still had to learn.
Andrew Martinez
Andrew Martinez grew up in a gated community in Albuquerque. He has no first-hand experience with crime or anything else. All his ideas come from television shows. He joined the correctional facility after hearing about it at a job fair.
Chaz Miller
Chaz Miller aspired to be an NFL great when he was little. He was always an athlete and competed as a bodybuilder. He tried college for a while, but realized it wasn’t for him and decided to pursue a career in prisons instead.
Ariel Montoya
When Ariel Montoya saw herself as an adult, she never imagined herself as a corrections officer. Ariel originally came to New Mexico to pursue a family studies degree at UNM, but after hearing her brother’s endless stories about his job at the New Mexico State Penitentiary, she decided to take a chance and give it a try, much to her family’s dismay.
Keith Pallesen
Keith, a native of Minnesota, has finally achieved his life’s ambition to work in law enforcement. He joined NMCD’s mentoring program in November 2014 after more than a decade of work as a truck driver, fast food employee and factory worker.
Israel Plascencia
Israel is older than the average rookie, at 36 years old. Israel spent his whole life trying to find a long-term job. After working as a beer system installer and music DJ, Israel was still dissatisfied, so he left his wife and beach house to pursue a career as a fixer.
Aaron Purto
Despite his inexperience, Aaron is one of PNM’s toughest cops, strictly enforcing laws and procedures. He prides himself on being tough, honest, and consistent, but his behavior irritates the inmates, who consider him a “super cop.” The inmates, who do not appreciate the newcomers trying to supervise them, have conflicts and even assaults as a result.
Carlos Rivera
Carlos only recently took their advice and joined the NMCD as a prison officer, despite his family working in law enforcement. He has been on and off the job for the past few years, most recently working in construction. Carlos is well aware that it would take time to learn and looks forward to one day moving up the ladder.
Lilly Rodriguez
Lilly, who is five feet tall and weighs 102 pounds, is regularly taunted by inmates. Everyone around her wonders if she is the right person for the position. With a shortage of female prison officers, Lilly is under more pressure than ever to make an impact. She has a degree in criminal justice and intends to join the FBI one day, and she feels working at Southern will give her the experience she needs.
Bruce Rounds
Bruce recently moved from San Jose, California to pursue his ambition to become a police officer. Many of his relatives and childhood acquaintances chose a life of thugs while growing up on the streets, a lifestyle he resisted, making him an outcast.
Christian Sandoval
Christian intended to pursue a career in rodeo, but was forced to give it up after getting his girlfriend pregnant and having to support his new daughter. As a commander in Western, he wants to protect and serve his community, but the stress, constant fear of violence, and long hours away from his new family could be too much for the mild-mannered cowboy.
Francisco Villacana
Francisco, a 22-year-old, was drawn to repairs because of the pay and the opportunity for advancement. In order to support his family, he had to wait on his plans to finish school.
Tyler Yaryan
Tyler was born in California and originally planned to join the Marines or go to college. Unfortunately, a neck injury prevented him from pursuing any of those plans. Now he went to a correctional facility.
