Kirby is one of the friendliest characters in video games. After all, who wouldn’t want to be friends with a little round pink ball of joy that keeps smiling? Through various adventures in the previous games, Kirby has been joined by various allies in various ways, including rideable pets and other controllable characters. Sometimes they are unique characters, like the burly King Dee Dee Dee, while sometimes they are just different colored versions of Kirby. Now he is on his biggest adventure yet Kirby and the Forgotten Landwhich immerses the game in 3D for the first time, many people wondered if co-op would even be possible in this new style of play.
Nintendo didn’t let us wonder for long. It was announced early that Kirby and the Forgotten Land it would indeed allow another player to pick up the Joy-con and join the party as Bandana Waddle Dee to support Kirby on his quest. However, exactly how you can start playing in co-op, as well as how much of the game will be available to play with another person, remains a mystery until the game’s release. If you’re ready to team up to rescue all those trapped Waddle Dees with a friend, here’s how to play co-op and what you can do in co-op, in Kirby and the Forgotten Land.

How to enable collaboration

Right at the beginning, when you start Kirby and the Forgotten Land you won’t find any option to start playing in co-op. Don’t worry, as the game only requires you to beat the opening walkthrough mission before allowing your friend to join the party. Beat that first level, grab the Star, and you’ll be notified that you can play with two players.
Once you’ve taken that easy first step, you can start playing co-op whenever you want. While on stage or Waddle Dee Town, press the + button to open your menu. Another option, below Continue, is Play Co-op. This will prompt each player to press L and R buttons on your controller to choose who is player 1 and who is player 2. Player 1 will obviously be Kirby and the other player controls Bandana Waddle Dee.
Please note that Kirby and the Forgotten Land only allows you to play co-op locally. You cannot join or invite a friend to join you from your own console through online play.
After that you can start playing as a team!
What you can do in co-op

There are lots of stages, challenges, bosses, mini-games and more Kirby and the Forgotten Land. So much so that you might be curious as to what you’re locked into when playing with a friend in co-op. The great news is that almost nothing is locked from co-op play. You can take over any stage, fight any boss and also play most of the minigames. Stages and bosses need to be triggered during co-op play, and the two-player supported mini-games will give you the option to do so when you trigger them in Waddle Dee Town.
Waddle Dee’s Bandana isn’t Kirby though, so that player will have different options compared to Player 1. While Kirby has a ton of copy abilities and a Mouthful mode, Waddle Dees doesn’t even seem to have a mouth, so Player 2 will have a completely different set skill. He has multiple jumps just like Kirby, he can do a grab into a spear attack, thrust his spear which can be comboed into an AoE attack, raise his spear to jump into the air and throw a barrage of spears, target specific enemies by aiming his spear, and will interact with Kirby in cool ways when they use full-mouth mode.
As you play stages or bosses together, keep in mind that Kirby is still the star Kirby and the Forgotten Land. The camera will follow Kirby, and if Bandana Waddle Dee disappears from the screen, he will return to view inside a safe little bubble. Additionally, if Kirby runs out of HP, both players are sent back to the last checkpoint you reached. If Waddle Dee is knocked out, Kirby can continue and eventually bring them back into action. The two can share food, which restores HP, by using it near each other. The pair will high five and both will gain health.
