Aliens: Dark Descent: release date, trailers, gameplay, and more

In space, no one can hear you scream. While the Alien franchise was a hit when it came to video games, the good ones were excellent. Alien: Isolation is the latest example of a game that fully captures the tone, atmosphere, and sense of dread of what it would be like to be trapped aboard a ship with the most dangerous hunter in the universe. However, just like the jump from the first film to the second, it looks like our next Alien game to look forward to is less about horror and intends to mix in a healthy dose of action.

Aliens: Dark Descent is the latest game that took us to the nests of Xenomorphs. However, unlike most other games that used this license, it is not a pure horror game, nor is it a first-person shooter. This is one of the most beloved franchises in film history, so if you’re at all curious to dive into the Aliens: Dark Descentwe will use our motion tracker to guide you safely.

Trailers

Aliens: Dark Descent official reveal announcement | Summer Game Fest 2022

Aliens Dark Descent was one of the first games shown during Summer Game Fest 2022 and was the first surprise of the show that no one knew about beforehand. The trailer opens on a snowy complex called Tantalus Base in the year 2198, where a soldier recounts the mission his squad was assigned to. They were supposed to enter the base to restore communications, but encountered a “problem”.

Flashing back to a mission flashback, we see the familiar Colonial Marines cutting a door with a blowtorch in a dank metal corridor dripping with water. One soldier has already died of unknown causes, but the company is moving on. The trio venture deeper into the base, becoming more encased in alien matter, until they see a humanoid figure, though the narration quickly explains that it was anything but human.

The aliens attack the squad as they try to hold them off while simultaneously retreating. One is taken away and the other runs through the door and locks up the last remaining member of his team.

When we cut back to the soldier telling his story, we now see that everyone else in the room is dead and that a pack of aliens is lurking in the shadows.

In itself, this is not too much, but we can highlight one more detail Aliens: Dark Descent it will happen 19 years later alien 3, which was 2179. This means that xemomorphs are a known quantity in this universe, not something we are encountering for the first time. We also know that it will take place on Moon Lethe, which is a new location in the franchise.

While we’ve only seen a tiny bit of actual gameplay, we know quite a bit about how Aliens: Dark Descent game. First, it’s an isometric real-time shooter where you’ll lead your squad through huge levels full of different routes and shortcuts. It also seems to have some hardcore tactical elements, such as the permanent death of any squad member and different classes to unlock, learn skills, level up and equip. Aside from soldier health, sanity is another factor you’ll need to manage when considering who to take on your next mission. Different areas are also persistent, meaning that any equipment you place, such as motion trackers, will remain in that location for future missions through that space.

Orders are given in real time to the entire squad as a unit, rather than issuing orders to individual Marines. There is also an option to slow down time to give you a chance to issue orders in the heat of battle. As expected, any Marine killed in a mission is lost forever.

Enemy types will include Face Huggers, Aliens, Praetorians, Rogue Humans, and even Alien Queens. Apparently new types will appear as well, but all of them will obviously adapt to your strategies.

Outside of combat, you’ll need to use resources to upgrade the home base called Otago. The overall goal is to prevent the epidemic from leaving Moon Lethe, which will likely be tied not only to success in key missions, but also to managing your resources outside of battle. Here you can also upgrade, equip and assemble your team between missions.

Disney & Marvel Games Showcase | D23 Exhibition

A quick look at Aliens: Dark Descent gameplay settled on D23 Expo 2022 at roughly the nine-minute mark. This finally shows us the game in action, which will be fully real-time. The HUD seems very cluttered, with icons around the center of the screen and along the top, movement tracking on the bottom left, squad status on the bottom, and commands and more on the left. Fortunately, time does seem to slow down, at least when selecting and targeting skills.

Pre-registration

Aliens Dark Descent is open for pre-orders on all platforms. There is currently only one version, the Standard Edition, which will cost $40. Pre-ordering will give you access to an exclusive black armor set for your marines, plus a cat to live in your base.
