Sonos releases microphone-free Arc SL Shadow Edition soundbar for $750

Sonos is now selling a Dolby Atmos-equipped version of its Arc soundbar called the Arc SL Shadow Edition. Spotted recently by a savvy Reddit user at their local Costco, it’s $50 cheaper than the regular $800 Arc, and it ships without the built-in microphones that give the Arc its smart speaker capabilities.

After reaching out to Sonos, we now know that the Arc SL is a Costco exclusive that’s available in stores now, and soon on Costco.com.

Customers can purchase the Sonos Arc SL Shadow Edition, available exclusively at participating Costco stores in the US and Canada. The Sonos Arc SL Shadow Edition brings the impressive sound Arc customers love in black and without built-in microphones.

The SL designation was previously given to the Sonos One SL, a version of the company’s Sonos One smart speaker that, like the Arc SL, comes without a microphone. We think the Sonos Arc is the best soundbar you can buy right now, but Sonos’ research has made it clear that there are some people who will avoid the Arc due to privacy concerns. The Arc SL solves those problems while also saving customers a few bucks.

Sonos has always gone to great lengths to convince customers that its microphone-equipped speakers don’t listen when you don’t want them to. He claims that the microphone arrays are controlled by an independent circuit and that when you mute the microphones with the mute button, they really can’t pick up the sounds in your home. However, there is nothing as reliable as the absence of a microphone.

Sonos has integrated smart speaker microphones into its Move portable Bluetooth speaker, as well as the Beam, a soundbar designed for smaller rooms. It is possible that we will see “SL” versions of these products in the future.

If you’re interested in buying a Sonos speaker, now is a good time for two reasons: First, there are still some Cyber Monday sales going on with select Sonos products discounted by up to $100. Second, the company recently introduced a new upgrade program for owners of its older products. The program gives customers 30% off any new Sonos product for each qualifying older product they own.

There’s no need to replace an old product, and there’s no requirement to stop using it, as Sonos previously required when it introduced the S2 version of its software — which is incompatible with the company’s legacy speakers and accessories.
