Nvidia’s Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4090 is the latest GPU darling, and it’s proving to punch above its weight. However, for one Newegg customer, the weights are exactly what they received in a recent order.
It must be exciting to receive the latest and greatest Nvidia GPU, but as Redditor u/NuclearInnardsBeep discovered, such joy can be fleeting.

According to a Reddit user, they recently purchased a Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4090 from Newegg, but when they opened the package, they found metal weights instead of a $1,600 accessory. The user also added that their account was apparently locked after they contacted Newegg customer support for help.
Newegg is not new to this kind of controversy. A few months ago, that publicly acknowledged that such cases exist and promised to “remain committed to providing the best customer experience”.
Why Newegg locked u/NuclearInnardsBeep’s account and stopped responding to their messages is unknown, but on the face of it, Newegg’s after sales department may need to reconsider their company’s promise regardless of who is at fault.
There are a few more mysteries in this story. The Redditor’s post is sparse, with only his plight listed in the subject line. It would also be a good idea to review the customer service message log that led to the locked account. Then the question arises, who put the metal plates in the box? It follows in the footsteps of many other GPU bait and switches where customers have swapped their items with smaller graphics cards or objects of similar weight, such as sand or a package of screws.
Until further investigations are conducted and completed, we cannot be 100% sure who is cheating who here. There may be more than meets the eye to this difficult question.
