6.15 billion collected on Saturday

Ursula von der Leyen opened it by announcing that on Saturday they received 6.15 billion, of which 4.9 billion euros from the European Investment Bank, in partnership with the Commission. Previously, on May 4, during a summit organized to collect funds, the EU, governments and wealthy philanthropists pledged to contribute around ten billion euros. So, it is already close to 16 billion euros in total.

“We would never put an end to this pandemic when it’s over,” said Mrs von der Leyen at the opening of this virtual event. “And that means every person in the world has access to testing, treatment and vaccines regardless of where they live, where they’re from and what they look like,” she continued.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, a former professional wrestler turned actor, will host a concert on Saturday that will be streamed online. Salma Hayek, Charlize Theron, Forest Whitaker or Angelique Kidjo will also be there. Philanthropist Melinda Gates and World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus were also heavily involved.
