To appeal to Baby Boomers, reality dating show “The Bachelor” is redefining itself by adding some spice. This time the main character is 72-year-old widower and retired restaurateur Gerry Turner from Hudson, Indiana, who is looking for love and wants to settle down.
One of two DC-area ladies vying for his attention, private school principal Joan Vassos is among 22 golden hopefuls vying for his affection.
Her biography states “Joan is really something special. She has four children and two grandchildren and is looking for love again after losing her husband of 32 years to pancreatic cancer. Joan is proud of herself for starting a new career in this chapter of her life and how resilient she has been to many unexpected life changes. When she’s not working, Joan likes to listen to Elton John, hang out with her dog, and cook a delicious meal. Joan describes herself as a loving mother and hard worker who would like to find someone to enjoy life with. The other lady is 60-year-old Nancy Hulkower, a retired interior designer from Alexandria, Virginia, and the wife of a prominent attorney.
Ex-husband of Joan Vassos
Joan Vassos was once married to her late husband John Vassos. They were reportedly married for 32 years.
Alumnus of Salisbury University, John was born on November 27, 1961 in Washington, DC to Elaine and the late Nicholas Vassos. He was the owner and operator of CapX Solutions and BCE Corporation.
John had a close relationship with the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George in Bethesda, Maryland, and was a lifelong member of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St. Sophia in Washington, DC. He valued time spent with his family and friends, as well as the beach, soccer and coaching.
John played cards with his “Greek uncles” for many afternoons, and stories about who cheated more are still hotly disputed. While he was fighting cancer, they even scared the oncology department at Sibley by playing cards in the cramped IV rooms.
John passed away on January 18, 2021 at the age of 59 after a difficult two-year battle with pancreatic cancer.
He is also survived by his sister, Katina Vassos of Washington, DC.

He also played football in high school and was captain his senior year.
Luke works in the role of SMB Account Executive – Emerging Markets at Okta. He went to Marquette University and graduated with a degree in business in 2019.
Joan’s other daughter Allison is the president of Itty Bitty Boutique. She attended Towson University and the University of Maryland Global Campus. She is 29 years old.
