Washing dishes sucks. A regular dishwasher is very helpful, but there are limits to what a typical model can do. Homeowners looking for the ultimate in dishwasher technology must turn to more unusual models and brands. Like Thermador’s Star Sapphire dishwasher.

With a brightly lit and customizable interior, adjustable shelves, more wash modes than you can think of, and a few unique interface tricks, this Thermador tries to set itself apart. However, these features don’t come cheap and will put a serious strain on your budget. We installed a $2,799 dishwasher in our test kitchen to see if it could convince us that a luxury dishwasher makes sense.

Elegant and highly adaptable

Like many appliances today, the Thermador has a minimalist stainless steel front. Those who want a custom kitchen will appreciate that it can be fitted with a custom front panel to match the rest of the kitchen cabinetry. If you opt for the stainless steel model, there are a few things to keep in mind: the door is not magnetic and is far from smudge-proof (although it doesn’t take much effort to leave fingerprints).

The unit will fit in a space measuring at least 34x24x24 inches. The dishwasher’s controls are hidden on the top panel, and the time-remaining power beam projects a small image on the floor that rotates between icons showing the time remaining and the current time. If you open it mid-cycle, simply close it and the wash continues. The model runs pretty quietly unless it’s in a wash cycle, which sounds like washing dishes. In our tests, we recorded an average sound of 62 dB during the wash cycle, which is roughly equivalent to a standard background music sound level. We had to put our ear close to the machine to hear it in action.

Perhaps our favorite feature is the Sapphire Glow emotionLight. Open the dishwasher and you’ll see a purple light (reminiscent of the interior of a Virgin American plane) illuminating the shelves. The effect gives off the vibe of waiting for your dishes to join the dance party. If you don’t like purple, you can change the light color to white, peach or two types of blue.

Inside the dishwasher are three highly adjustable shelves: upper and lower drawers with movable handles and an upper drawer, called the Chef’s Tool Drawer. Slightly deeper than the standard utensil rack found in many models, it can fit tools with larger handles and smaller containers, which is convenient. While you can remove the pot and pan racks, the bottom one is pretty secure—meaning it won’t easily roll off the door onto the floor.

Clear dishwasher controls are located across the top panel, and a sturdy thick handle allows you to hang a towel. In addition to the power button, you’ll have options for: Pots and pans (baked on food and fat that usually requires soaking), Auto, Normal, Glass, Hand wash (acceptable for super delicate dishes), One hour, Star Speed (hot wash for 20 minutes), fast (30 to 35 minutes) and rinsing.

Open the dishwasher and you’ll see a purple light (reminiscent of the interior of a Virgin American plane) illuminating the shelves.

There are also several other settings, including PowerBoost (uses more energy to reduce wash time), Half Load, Sanitize and StarDry. The display is located in the center of the panel and provides additional information about the dishwasher. The two Star options are unique to Thermador and are designed to optimize dishwashing. We have one complaint about the washing cycle time: the time does not match what is stated in the manual. For example, the initial speed has a wash cycle of 20 minutes. But in our tests it took twice as long to complete the cycle. To be fair, the actual time the machine was washing dishes were 20 minutes. So basically calling a cycle only 20 minutes long is only kind of true.

If you can’t be near the dishwasher, you can still control several features with its We connected to the app without any problems and were able to start the dishwasher remotely. But like the apps that come with many larger devices, we’re not sure it saves time. We still have to put the dishes in the machine… why don’t we just press start while we’re at it?

A strong performer

Over the course of more than a month of testing, we ran a variety of workloads, trying different settings to see how well the Thermador performed. Overall, we were impressed with the results. The barely washed dishes sparkled. We particularly liked the feature that allows you to tap the dishwasher handle to open it — ideal when your hands are full.

To test the dishwasher, we spread dijon mustard, sriracha, and maple syrup on various plates and bowls and left them outside for several hours. Just for good measure, we melted some cheese on the plate. We put them in the dishwasher without rinsing or scraping off any food residue. We ran the load on a 20-minute Star Speed race. Although the cycle took more than 20 minutes, almost every plate turned out flawless. There was a little residue left in one bowl of melted cheese, but overall, the machine gave us clean bowls and plates. Many dishwashers have trouble cleaning dishes during fast cycles, but this was not the case with the Thermador.

Running the dishwasher on other cycles such as Normal and Half Load produced similar results – the dishes were not only clean, they were sparkling clean, just like you see in the commercials. This is one of the best dishwashers we’ve tested in a long time.

Warranty information

The Thermador dishwasher comes with a two-year warranty that starts from the date of purchase. There is a five-year limited warranty on the electronics (such as the microprocessor or printed circuit board) and the dish rack. Thermador owners will appreciate the lifetime warranty that covers the stainless steel.
