Operations to try and recover Estelle Mouzin’s body ended Thursday night after four days of searching the serial killer’s two former properties.

Excavation operations to try to find the body of Estelle Mouzin ended Thursday night in the Ardennes, after four days of fruitless searches in two old properties of serial killer Michel Fourniret, police told AFP. “All planned revisions have been made” but nothing has been discovered, they said, adding that “assumptions and doors” are now “closed”.

“The Hound of the Ardennes”, confessed in March to the murder of a 9-year-old girl, abducted in January 2003 in Guermantes (Seine-et-Marne), claiming to the judiciary that it was “appropriate” that his body, which was never found, might be located on one of his old estates in the Ardennes.

In the early morning, military personnel and gendarmes, accompanied by Paris judge Sabine Kheris, returned to Sautou Castle, a huge 15-hectare estate located in the commune of Donchery and isolated in the middle of the forest. Diggers, divers, drones, forensic experts… important equipment was mobilized.

“Everything has been done by all the services of the police and the army (…) and I don’t think it can be done any further,” Me Richard Delgenes, the lawyer of Fourniret’s ex-wife, Monique Olivier, told reporters late in the afternoon. “At least we know that we were not able to find the body in places that scientifically could have been hidden,” he added. He also expressed the desire to bring Michel Fourniret to the scene himself, which would be “more effective in analyzing his words, because we don’t know when he is manipulating and when he is not”.

Excavated basement of a house

On Monday, the investigators first went to Ville-sur-Lumes, ten kilometers away, unsuccessfully searching the basement of the house that once belonged to the sister of the serial killer, who died in 2002. Michel Fourniret went there regularly until his arrest in 2003.

A receipt printed at a nearby supermarket on January 11, 2003 – two days after the disappearance of Estelle Mouzin in Guermantes (Seine-et-Marne) – and found during a police search in Fourniret, led investigators to this residential area.

The investigative team, composed of about fifty gendarmes and experts, including members of the Institute for Criminal Investigation of the Gendarmerie, the Fluvial Brigade or military sappers, then searched the huge Sautou field on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. In 2004, the bodies of Elisabeth Brichet, 12, and Jeanne-Marie Desramault, 22, two of Fourniret’s victims, were found on this secluded property, which can only be reached by a forest road.

“It cannot be said that there is progress,” but “there were closed doors, (…) places that we can remove today,” said Didier Seban, one of the Mouzin family lawyers, on Tuesday evening. The investigations could continue in Belgium, he said.

The “Hound of Arden” was convicted in 2008 of the murders of seven young women or adolescent girls between 1987 and 2001 and sentenced to life in prison without parole, before being convicted of murder in 2018.

Estelle Mouzin: justice seeks the land of Fourniret in the Ardennes Michel Fourniret has confessed to the murder of Estelle Mouzin, the Paris public prosecutor informs. His ex-wife Michel Fourniret “killed Estelle Mouzin”

After years of denial, in early March he confessed to the murder of Estelle Mouzin. “It is possible that this picture is pleasant to me (…), and I recognize a being who is no longer there due to his own fault,” he told the judge. But “circumstances, result, denouement, it’s a matter of chance”.
