Laughter As Cat is Convinced ‘Cool’ New Baby Gear Was Bought For Him

The mom-to-be revealed how her cat reacted with excitement to the preparations for their new arrival.

Unfortunately, Kevin the cat gets excited for the wrong reasons.

In a video posted on TikTok under the hashtag elliekregel1, pregnant hairstylist Ellie Kregel from Ohio revealed how Kev somehow jumped to the conclusion that much of the new gear they were buying for their unborn baby was actually for him.

“When your mom and dad keep bringing cool new things home for you,” the screen caption reads over footage of a black cat playing with a baby mobile, testing out a new stroller and enjoying what looks like a very deep sleep on the baby’s new bed.

Although cats are largely independent animals – except when it comes to maintaining a litter box as well as regular bowls of food or water – taking care of a cat’s companionship has some similarities to taking care of a small child.

In 2022. Study published in journal Behavioral processes they found that when it comes to communicating with cats, cats respond when their owners speak to them as they do to babies – in a higher pitch, lengthening the vowels and with some repetition.

The study showed 16 cats and their owners sitting quietly in a room while a series of five recordings of their owners’ voices was played. The first three were spoken in an adult-oriented voice before the fourth saw their owner adopt a more cat-like speech before reverting to adult-oriented speech for the final phrase.

When the cats heard the first three phrases in adult-directed speech, they became less and less responsive. However, their response was more significant when they heard the cat-directed speech before dropping out again when the final adult-directed recording was played.

Interestingly, cats did not show any reaction when listening to a stranger’s voice speaking in a cat way. Researchers believe this suggests that cats view the relationship they have with their owner as similar to that of a parent and child.

So it’s no wonder Kevin assumed all these new toys were for him – Kev probably sees himself as Kregel’s baby and acts accordingly.

Although the black cat might be in for a real shock when the new baby arrives, there’s every chance they’ll end up becoming best friends.

Meanwhile, his exploits as chief tester of Kregel’s baby gear have been entertaining the internet with a video that has amassed 5.5 million views and counting.

“This makes me want to buy baby stuff for my cat,” wrote one comment after another: “I honestly thought you bought everything for the cat and I said to myself ‘you know I understand’.”

A third said: “My boy was like this too. And when we brought each baby home, he was like cool, someone to cuddle with in my crib.”

Another wrote: “My cat currently thinks my pregnancy pillow is for him and the bassinet, he’s in for a rude awakening in a few months.”

Kevin could face the same.

Newsweek has contacted Kregel for comment.
