Everything we know about the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake

The Prince of Persia series goes back a lot longer than most people realize. Originally garnering attention as an Apple 2 game in 1989, the 2D platformer used rotoscoping to create the most fluid and realistic animations ever seen at the time. Since then, the series has grown in popularity, peaking with the Sands of Time trilogy on the PS2 generation, starting with Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, and after that follows Prince of Persia: Warrior Within and Prince of Persia: Two Thrones. After these games, the series only had two notable releases for consoles, but neither achieved the same amount of acclaim as the previous trilogy.

After essentially being transformed into the Assassin’s Creed series, many people thought the Prince of Persia franchise was dead and buried. However, Ubisoft is not a publisher that would let a franchise die, and announced Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake 2020. Since then, fans mostly didn’t know how much this remake would change or stay true to the original.

And those keeping a close eye on the game’s not-so-smooth development might be worried about whether the game will even come out. Let’s turn back the clock and review everything we know about Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake.

Release date

Oh man, this hurts. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake was originally announced in 2020 with a release window of January 2021. Obviously, that didn’t happen and the game was pushed back to March 18th, 2021. Again, this date won’t be reached. However, the next delay did not come with another target release date and simply remained ambiguous.

Ultimately, Ubisoft thought progress was going well and planned the game for sometime in 2022, but as of May 2022, Ubisoft once again announced that the game would not be released within the 2023 fiscal year as it was moving development from Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai teams up with Ubisoft Montreal, the studio that developed the original game. They also canceled all pre-orders for the game, leading many to think that the game had been cancelled, although Ubisoft quickly confirmed that this was not the case.

All this means that what sounded like a quick and easy project will now take more than three years from the original expected release date. We don’t know why development was switched between studios or how much work will be transferred, so trying to predict a release date is nearly impossible.

Unless this change in developers and additional delays come with new platform announcements, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake maybe it needs a remake already as it is only planned to be released on PS4, Xbox One and PC. If it’s taking them this long to get it out, they might as well at least port it to current-gen hardware, even though they’re backwards compatible.

Trailers

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake Official Trailer | Ubisoft Forward 2020 | Ubisoft [NA]

For all time that we know of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake, the only trailer shown was the announcement trailer from 2020. It shows footage of the original game with some new voiceover talking about the passage of time before cutting to new footage. Those who played the original will recognize the scene as a recreation of an early scene from the game in which the prince uses the Dagger of Time to unleash the Sands of Time, corrupting almost everyone in the city into sand monsters.

From there we get a look at the classic combat, traps and parkour from the original game. Plus, of course, the iconic feature of being able to rewind time with an undo dagger.

Playing

From what is shown, which is no doubt out of date at this point, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake looks like a faithful remake in terms of gameplay. In a way, it looks a lot like Demon’s Souls Remake, where all the mechanics seem to be intact, just with new models, textures and lighting. The prince can perform move combos with his sword and dagger, incorporate parkour into his fighting style, and use sand for a variety of powerful moves.

The movement also looks the same. We see wall running, climbing and various acrobatic feats just like in the original game. Nothing shown looked new, so for better or worse, expect this game to be a faithful remake in terms of how the game plays.

Ubisoft noted that the game will have two control schemes to choose from: one reworked for modern standards and a classic one that mimics how the original was played.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake it won’t have multiplayer if it’s as faithful to the original as it appears to be. There has never been multiplayer in the entire history of the series, and despite having a supporting character in some parts of the original, it wouldn’t make sense to let another person control them.

Pre-registration

In a strange twist, you could pre-order Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake Until recently. However, with the news of the latest delay and studio move, pre-orders have effectively been removed from retailer lists, and anyone who previously placed their orders has had theirs cancelled. If and when Ubisoft restocks pre-orders, we’ll let you know when it’s safe to put them back up.
