‘UFO at SFO’ or a ‘glitch in the matrix’? San Francisco’s ‘planeception’ stumps netizens

A passenger on a flight in San Francisco was startled to see a plane that seemed to be frozen in mid-air. A traveler took a video of the rare optical illusion and shared it on Reddit. The video caused curiosity and confusion among viewers.

The video shows the plane hovering over a highway crossing a large body of water. The video poster wrote: “People reacting to this viral video are saying it’s a ‘matrix glitch’.”

The illusion is not caused by magic or malfunction, but by a combination of factors.

One factor is the lack of visual reference points in the open sky, making it difficult to see that the plane is actually moving.

Another factor is the synchronized movement of passengers and aircraft, traveling at comparable speeds and in the same direction. This is why the aircraft appears to be at rest because it does not change its distance from the observer’s eye. This can happen if you are traveling next to a plane, either in another plane or in a car near the airport, and the other plane is moving a little slower.

This phenomenon is relatively rare, but seems to occur more often in San Francisco, where specific weather conditions and visibility often allow planes to land closer than usual.

However, some viewers had their own theories about what was going on, suggesting that the plane was still stuck there or that it was a “matrix glitch”. Some locals said they have seen this many times and it is not unusual or special.

“They keep coming so super slow,” wrote one person who claimed to live near the San Francisco airport.

“It seems impossible, but it’s not.”

“As someone who lives in this area and drives over that bridge all the time, I’m sure hundreds or thousands of people would have stopped on it and filmed the plane just hovering above them in the air,” another person commented.

In August, a similar video was posted on Reddit showing a United Airlines plane “floating” in the air.

It was also filmed at the San Francisco airport.

“Landing in the FSR. What’s going on here?” the poster wrote, adding an alien emoji.

One commenter joked that it was a “UFO at SFO,” while another said the San Francisco airport was “famous” for its double landings, which created the effect.
