How to keep your MacBook from sleeping

Apple’s MacBooks have several options related to preserving the system battery and the amount of remaining charge. The main way it does this is through Sleep Mode, which puts an Apple laptop into a temporary sleep mode that uses the least amount of power possible, while still giving you the ability to wake it up immediately and pick up where you left off.

But if you don’t want sleep mode to interrupt what you and your MacBook are doing, there are a few ways to keep it always on—here’s how.

Disabling Sleep Mode via Power/Battery Saver Settings (MacOS Ventura and later)

Some things have changed with the introduction of MacOS Ventura. The name of the utility used to configure your Mac has changed from “System preferences” to “System Settings”. And the format changed from an icon-oriented interface to tabs on the side. Many specific system settings have also changed. So if you’re moving from a Mac with a previous version of MacOS, you should follow these instructions.

Nevertheless, it remains simple enough to turn off sleep mode in MacOS Ventura and later versions.

Step 1: Open System settings.

Step 2: Choose Screen lock tab. You will find two options: Turn off screen on battery when not active and Turn off the display on the power adapter when it is not active. Next to each will be a selection of how long the screen should be inactive before turning off. Choose “Never” to prevent your Mac from sleeping,

Step 3: You can also make sure your Mac doesn’t go to sleep when it’s plugged in and the screen is off. To do this, select Battery tab, therefore Possibilities…. Then switch Prevent sleeping on the power adapter when the screen is off on.

By default, the Turn off screen after section will already be set to a specific time, which is used when no activity is detected on the Mac.

To completely disable this feature, drag the slider to the right where it says Never.

It’s important to note how this will affect your battery if your Mac doesn’t have sleep options enabled. As Apple itself states in the power saving window, not letting your screen go to sleep can shorten its lifespan.

If your Mac is always operational when it’s not completely shut down, it will also affect the overall battery health of your system.
