2023’s Pink Halloween: Discover this year’s spooky costume choices with US’s largest Halloween chain

Halloween is a big deal this year, and people are spending more money on the holiday than ever before. According to the National Retail Federation, total Halloween spending will reach a record $12.2 billion, up from $10.6 billion in 2022.

A lot of that money goes to costumes, which will cost $4.1 billion this year. That’s almost a billion dollars more than before the pandemic.

Some costumes are always popular for adults, like witches and vampires. This year, the NRF says 5.8 million people will dress up as witches and 2.4 million will dress up as vampires.

But what’s new and trendy this year? Spirit Halloween, the largest Halloween chain in the US, says it depends on what’s happening in pop culture. For example, one of the best choices this year is Barbie.

“Once the parties start happening, we’re going to see a lot of Barbie,” Marisa Uzzolino, head of PR for Spirit Halloween, told NPR’s Morning Edition.

“Western Barbie, Skating Barbie, Skating Ken.”

The Barbie movie is the biggest movie of the year and has earned more than a billion dollars at the box office. About 1.8 million people will dress up as Barbie this year.

Other popular costumes this year were inspired by Wednesday and the Addams Family and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Both had new TV shows and movies last year.

As for costumes based on different eras, last year people loved costumes from the 1980s. But this year they are choosing costumes from the 1970s.

“We’ve seen a new wave of hippie styles and hippie things coming back,” says Uzzolino. She says Spirit Halloween has more of that part in stores this year.

The most popular costume for children this year is Spiderman, and 2.6 million children plan to dress up as a superhero. But Uzzolino says there’s another character that kids and parents love this Halloween.

“We’re seeing a lot of growth in Bluey. It is a very popular show and is also aimed at parents. So we have for kids and we have for parents,” she says, referring to the main character from the hit children’s series Bluey.

Pets also get into the Halloween spirit. More and more people are buying costumes for their pets.

“This is something we have expanded since last year. We will continue to grow it next year because it is something that people ask for every year.” Uzzolino says.

The NRF says the top three pet costumes are pumpkins, hot dogs and bats. Spending on pet costumes increased by $200 million during the pandemic.

If you want to get your Halloween costumes now, you should hurry. Spirit Halloween says the last two weeks before Halloween are their busiest and most customers make last-minute purchases.

“The month goes by quickly. So I think the sooner the better. Get your costumes now,” Uzzolino said.
