The Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (Delhi–Meerut RRTS) project is India’s first rapid transit system. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the RRTS project on October 20 and it will be available to commuters on October 21, a day after the inauguration. There are five stations on the priority section between Sahibabad and Duhai Depot- Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guldhar, Duhai and Duhai Depot.
Some time ago, this project was in the news amid a standoff between the India-China border as the Swadeshi Jagran Manch wants the government to cancel the tender awarded to China’s Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Company for the construction. However, the Government of India has stated that the contract cannot be canceled as the project is financed by ADB. How to buy tickets?
You can buy tickets via:
- RAPIDX Connect: The RAPIDX Connect smartphone app allows you to purchase tickets based on a digital QR code.
- National Common Mobility Card (NCMC): Any card that is compatible with the NCMC can be used for travel. NCMC cards can be reloaded with a minimum of $100 and a maximum of $2,000.
- Ticket Vending Machines (TVM): You can buy paper travel tickets with a QR code from ticket machines at stations. These devices can also be used to recharge your NCMC card.
- Ticket counters: Ticket counters at stations sell paper travel tickets with a QR code.
In addition, ticket vending machines equipped with Unified Payments Interface (UPI) have been installed to purchase QR code based paper tickets and recharge NCMC.
About the project
1- It is a semi-high speed rail corridor that will connect Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut after its completion.
2- The corridor is 82.15 km long (68.03 km elevated and 14.12 km underground) and will cover the distance between Delhi and Meerut in about an hour.
3- The project will be implemented by the National Capital Regional Transport Corporation (NCRTC), jointly owned by the Central and State Governments.
4- Bombardier Transportation of India will manufacture the trains at its plant in Gujarat.
5- The project will have buses that can reach a speed of 160 km per hour.
6-30 RRTS sets will be operational for regional services and will have a total of 6 coaches, while 10 RRTS sets will be operational for Meerut city services and will have a total of 3 coaches.
7- RRTS corridor will have 22 stations– 16 regional stations and 6 stations in Meerut.
8- The project will connect the Delhi Metro, bus and train stations, making it easier for people to move from one public transport to another.
9- The RRTS project aims to build a network of high-speed suburban rail lines connecting Delhi and neighboring cities.
10- It is expected that the corridor will be in operation by 2025.
11- The project will be financed in four tranches– from August 2020 to May 2025.
Cost of the project
The government will provide $1.89 billion while ADB will invest $1 billion in the project. The total cost of the project will be 3.94 billion dollars.

Corridors of RRTS
As part of the Regional Rapid Transport System (RRTS) project, 8 corridors have been identified. Of these 8 corridors, 3 were prioritized according to the NCR Regional Plan 2021. They are as follows:
1- Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut
2- Delhi-Gurugram-SNB-Alwar
3- Delhi-Panipat
