Now that his first season has come to an end, many fans Periphery they naturally wonder if the series will be renewed for a second season. However, until one is announced, all we can do is dig deep into the end of the first season and look for any potential clues as to where the story could go from here.

The first season Periphery follows Flynne Fisher, a young woman living in 2032 who discovers that her world is part of an experiment being conducted by various shady characters in 2099 London. Flynne can access this future through a peripheral, which is basically a VR headset that allows her to control a robotic body within that world. As the first season unfolds, we are introduced to a series of villains that Flynne is recruited to stop, including Dr. Cherise Nuland, who works for an organization known as the Research Institute, and Zev Lubov, who is the head of a mob-ist organization known as Klept.
Flynne doesn’t defeat any of these foes in the season one finale, but she has averted the apocalypse in the 2032 timeline known as the Jackpot, at least for now. Cherise initially planned to destroy the world, known as the club, because of the information in Flynne’s hands that she was worried might end up in Klept. However, when Flynne discovers Cherise’s plan to end her obsolescence, she decides to implement her own plan to save the world from destruction.

Flynn’s plan to save the rest of her taint is to die. After agreeing with Inspector Lowbeer, Flynne comes up with a plan that will mean the end of her life in 2032, but not the complete end of her life. She creates another shard after infiltrating the Research Institute and then destroys the device that will allow Cherise to reveal her whereabouts. She died in her original world, but found a new pocket universe where she can exist in almost exactly the same way without Cherise following her.
Now, Cherise has no reason to destroy Flynne’s piece, which the Research Institute initially invested a lot of time and money into to conduct the kinds of experiments that would be illegal in their reality.
A klept could destroy Flynne’s piece anyway

In the post-credits scene, we see that Flynne’s actions may have been just a temporary solution to a more permanent problem. Lubov is seen meeting with other Klept members, who tell him that if even one branch is giving him trouble, he should cut down the entire tree. It’s a metaphor, but it seems to point clearly to the idea that Lubov and Klept could be coming for Flynne’s part in the show’s second season. Flynne may have avoided a crisis for her world by sacrificing herself, but all she may have done was buy the people she loves in that world a little more time.
