Throwing a mask or a cigarette butt on the ground could cost € 135

On Sunday, the government published a draft of a regulation that foresees a fine of 68 to 135 euros for local residents who throw waste on the public road

On Sunday, the government presented a draft regulation that provides for fines of 68 to 135 euros for local residents who throw waste on public roads.

Littering in public places, a mask or even a cigarette butt could be sanctioned with a fine of 135 euros compared to 68 euros currently, according to the draft regulation, State Secretary for Environmental Transition Brune Poirson announced on Sunday.

The presentation of this draft regulation, which also applies to masks, gloves, cigarette butts and again to the disposal of wild waste, is expected in mid-June. The fine could go as high as 375 euros or 750 euros if the police compile a report and send it to the court, according to the ministry.

The measure is part of a circular economy plan launched in 2018, and “with Covid-19 it has found a new resonance, with the multiplication of the number of new abandoned waste linked to the health crisis”, instead of being thrown in the trash, the ministry says.

“Any waste thrown on the ground often ends up in the ocean”

“Everyone needs to understand that any waste dumped on land often ends its journey in the ocean,” Brune Poirson said in a statement. “If one wants to have clean seas and oceans, it starts with clean pavements,” continues the Secretary of State, who is visiting Lège-Cap-Ferret, in Gironde, on Sunday, ahead of World Oceans Day, to collect plastic waste.
