According to a study published on Friday, patients with hypertension have an increased risk of dying from the coronavirus.

Patients suffering from arterial hypertension admitted to the hospital due to Covid-19 were twice as likely to die as those who did not suffer from this pathology, according to a study published on Friday in the medical journal European Heart Journal.

“It is important for patients with high blood pressure to understand that they have an increased risk of dying from Covid-19,” says one of the study’s authors, Pr Fei Li, a cardiologist at Xijing Hospital in Xian, central China.

The risk is twice as high

For this observational study, Chinese and Irish researchers retrospectively reviewed data from those admitted between February 5 and March 15 at Huoshenshan Hospital in Wuhan. The result is remarkable: almost 30% of admitted people or 850 patients suffered from hypertension. 4% of these patients died, compared to 1.1% of those who did not suffer from high blood pressure.

After adjusting for differences in age, gender and health status, the researchers calculated that the risk of death from Covid for a hypertensive patient admitted to hospital was twice that of another.

another analysis, which combined data from this hospital with data from three other studies, showed that patients taking a class of blood pressure drugs, renin-angiotensin system (RAAS) inhibitors, had a lower risk of death compared with those treated with other medicines.

But the authors urge caution on this issue, given the small number of patients involved. “We suggest patients not to stop or change their usual hypertension treatment unless instructed to do so by their doctor,” explains one of the study’s authors, Pr Ling Tao from Xijing Hospital.

The authors emphasize that these studies are purely observational and not based on clinical trials, and that new research would be needed to make clinical recommendations more definitive.
