How often does Fury Bowser appear?

Similar to an enemy like Nemesis from the Resident Evil series, Fury Bowser can appear as a terrifying enemy during your adventure in the Bowser’s Fury — seemingly at any time. Although in reality Fury Bowser spawns every 5-6 minutes and is set to a timer rather than an in-game activity that triggers his spawn.

While Fury Bowser is present, the world around you becomes much darker and more deadly, as all your enemies are enhanced and can deal extra damage. Even non-hostile creatures like cats become hostile during this phase. Knowing the 5-6 minute timer can be a great way to plan your route through the open world, so always try to remember how long it’s been since Bowser last appeared.

Once Bowser breaks your game, you’ll probably be wondering how to get rid of him. Fortunately, there are a few key steps you can take to ensure the creature goes away, allowing you to get back to blissful platforming and exploration. Which step you take can sometimes depend on your environment and skill level, and we’ll detail all the methods to deal with Fury Bowser below.

Fight him

The first and easiest method to get rid of Fury Bowser is to fight him. However, there are a few things you need to know about initiating in combat. In order to initiate the fight, you must visit the Giga Bell (shown in the image above) while Fury Bowser is present. Once you’ve collected enough Cat Shines, you’ll unlock a Giga Bell on a certain island, so approach it and you’ll grow to massive size — perfect for destroying Bowser.

During the battle, your goal is to attack Bowser while he is vulnerable. There are a few ways to do this, but the safest way is to wait for Bowser to use his spinning grenade attack, jump over the explosion, and then perform a jumping attack while the grenade is reversed. This can take a while, and if you’re not quick enough, the battle will be over before you can fully deplete Bowser’s health bar. While in cat form, you can actually slash Bowser to deal minimal damage — but it’s still effective if you attack often.

Eventually, after you reduce Bowser’s health to zero, or after a few minutes, the fight will end and the creature will disappear — briefly.

Collect Cat Shine

Main driving forces Bowser’s Fury are Cat Shines, which are similar to the green stars from the main game. As you collect them, more folders are revealed, as well as the ability to use the aforementioned Giga Bells. Cat Shines (pictured above) are obtained from certain quests and can be found by simply exploring each island. As a rule of thumb, you should always be on the lookout for new platforms that appear while Bowser is around, as this can help you get your hands on previously unavailable Cat Shines. Collect one and it will temporarily dispatch Bowser.

Wait for him to leave

During the early stages of the game, you can make Bowser retreat after about a minute and a half. That’s right, you can just avoid him and he will go away eventually. But it’s important to note that once you’ve collected enough Cat Shines, Bowser will appear and the sky will turn red, meaning you can’t just wait for him to leave. During these instances, you must collect Cat Shine to make Bowser escape.

How to break Fury Bowser’s blocks

There are sets of gray blocks with Bowser’s icon on them known as Fury Bowser blocks all over the world. These are indestructible during normal play, but can break while Bowser attacks you. The best way to break them is to get Bowser to use his fire breath on you, and if timed correctly, he’ll fire an attack towards the blocks, shattering them instantly. For best results we advise standing directly behind the blocks to avoid damage.

There are also some Fury Bowser blocks that are inside the wall — and those you can’t hide behind. Depending on which Mario costume you have, you may be able to stand in front of a block, lure Bowser into launching a fire attack, and then quickly fly into the air to avoid it. But this can still be difficult, and most of the time we end up just taking damage. It’s not the end of the world, because it’s quite easy to find various costumes on the map. Either way, have Bowser attack the blocks and break them.

These Fury Bowser blocks usually contain things like Cat Shine or will allow you to unlock Cat Shine later, so always be on the lookout for them while Bowser is around. While some may not seem useful, they are usually related to the Cat Shine collection in some way. Also note that you can actually create Bowser at will if you use the Bowser amiibo — any of the variants will do. This will make destroying blocks much easier.
